Abstract

A routing information system includes a processor, a transit database, mobile communicators communicatively coupled to the transit database via a common interface, and external databases communicatively coupled to the transit database. A user of a mobile communicator requests an itinerary by entering a description of travel that includes a start location, a destination, and an attribute into the mobile communicator. The mobile communicator sends the description of travel to the routing information system. In response to receiving the description of travel, the system looks up routes based on the description of travel and sends a suggested itinerary that conforms to the description of travel to the mobile communicator. The user can accept the suggested itinerary by entering an acceptance into the mobile communicator, which sends an acceptance signal to the routing information system, or the user can request another itinerary. In response to receiving an acceptance signal, the system sends a first leg of the itinerary to the user of the mobile communicator. The first leg can include a mode of travel, a departure time, and an arrival time. The user employs the mobile communicator to send a completion signal when the user completes the first leg of the itinerary. In response to receiving the completion signal, the system sends a second leg of the itinerary to the user of the mobile communicator.
