Abstract

An apparatus and a method for defibrillating and/or pacing the heart of a person or animal. Comprises means for establishing an electrical circuit comprising at least two electrically conducting surface parts of the electrode means, removable means, and second means for providing electrical contact between a surface part of an electrode and current providing means. The means for establishing an electrical circuit is adapted to provide information relating to that circuit. The apparatus may perform self-tests at regular time intervals based on information relating to an electrical/ohmic resistance of the electrical circuit. Thus, a defect/poorly functioning apparatus may be replaced before being used in a defibrillation/pacing, and the risk of encountering a defect apparatus is greatly reduced. Furthermore, electrode means for use in an apparatus according to the invention.
