Abstract

The invention concerns an anti-vibration balance weight for motor vehicle, of the wheel balance type or noise damper type, produced by injection moulding of a thermoplastic material (in particular of the polyamide, polypropylene or polycarbonate type) containing a weight filling of metal particles. Preferably, the weight filling consists of tungsten powder which represents between 80 and 90 wt. % of the final material.

Description

The present invention relates to a new structure for an anti-vibration mass for a motor vehicle, of the wheel balancing mass or noise suppressor type.
The anti-vibration masses installed on motor vehicles are of two main types: wheel balancing masses and noise suppressors.
Balance weights for vehicle wheels consist of a heavy bar or plate, usually made of lead, stapled or glued to the rim flange.
Noise suppressors are generally in the form of lead weights which are fixed at carefully chosen locations on the vehicle chassis by means of screw-nut systems associated with elastic damping members.
But the use of lead is increasingly regulated, in particular because of its toxicity and the environmental or ecological problems it poses; it is therefore advantageous, in particular in this field of anti-vibration masses for motor vehicles, to find substitutes for this material, or at least to limit its possibilities of dissemination by contact.
To this end, the anti-vibration mass in accordance with the present invention is produced by injection molding of a thermoplastic material containing a weight load consisting of metal particles.
The corresponding anti-vibration mass is very simple to manufacture after homogeneous mixing of the plastic base with the metallic load. This technique makes it very easy to obtain any form of chemically stable product, the metallic charge included in the plastic base being made absolutely inert.
The thermoplastic material used is preferably chosen from polyamide, polypropylene or polycarbonate. The metallic weight charge may be in the form of flakes or fibers, but it is preferably used in the form of a powder whose particle sizes are between 0.5 and 300 μm (and preferably between 5 μm and 50 μm).
It is also possible to use mixtures of metals, or even particles of a metal alloy such as bronze or steel.
The nature of the metallic filler, and its rate of incorporation into the thermoplastic base are suitable for obtaining a molded composite material whose density is greater than 8, and preferably between 10 and 12, that is to say close to the density of lead conventionally used.
According to a preferred embodiment, and in order to obtain an inexpensive final product whose mass characteristics approach those of lead, the weight charge consists of tungsten particles, or of a tungsten derivative, present in proportions between 80 and 95% of the weight of the final material.
More preferably, the tungsten (or derivative) particles represent approximately 90% of the weight of the final material.
Figures 1 and 2 attached are sectional views, respectively of a wheel balancing mass and a noise suppressor, produced by injection molding of thermoplastic material containing a metallic weight charge.
These two anti-vibration masses are obtained after homogeneous mixing of the metallic weight charge with the basic thermoplastic material.
In these two figures, the homogeneous distribution of the metallic particles included in the thermoplastic material is noted. The finer the metal particles used, the less visible and accessible they are, in particular at the level of the external surface of the part.
