Abstract

An optical communication system including a data card (500) including: a housing (524) having a computing unit (528), a detector (534), operatively connected to the computing unit, for detecting a signal from a device external to the data card, an optical communication element (532) operatively connected to the computing unit, the optical communication element for transferring optical information between the data card and the device, and a substrate (554) attached to the housing, the substrate having an at least semi-transparent region (552) to enable optical communication between the optical communication element and the device, and between the detector and the device, through the substrate.
