Abstract

Nuclear magnetic resonance well logging apparatus (#20) and method of use for geophysical examination of a borehole as the borehole is drilled. The apparatus (#20) is connected to the drill bit (#36) to follow it through the borehole as the borehole is formed. The apparatus (#20) comprises a non-magnetic protective collar (#34) with lateral protrusions or wings (#40), which provide enhanced abrasion resistance, strength, and rigidity to the probe section (#24). This collar (#34) is twisted about its longitudinal axis (#28). The apparatus also comprises one or more permanent magnets (#46) within the metal collar (#34) and an antenna (#26) mounted outside of the collar (#34). Both the magnet (#46) and the antenna (#26) are twisted about the longitudinal axis (#28) of the probe section (#24) to produce a generally helical static magnetic field and a radio frequency magnetic field that is substantially orthogonal to the static magnetic field.
