Abstract

A method for coating a surface, in particular a surface of a medical device, with a drug, comprises depositing the drug coating on the surface; applying energy to the drug coating to increase molecular mobility; and allowing cooling of the coating to form a conformable coating without degradation of the drug. The system to deposit a drug on a surface, in particular on a surface of a medical device, comprises means for depositing the drug on the surface; means for temporarily heating the drug to increase molecular mobility and elimination of microcracks.

Claims

AMENDED CLAIM received by the International Bureau on 31 March 2004 (31.03.04)
1. A method for applying a steroid coating to a medical device electrode, the method comprising the steps of: depositing the steroid on a surface of the electrode such that a coating having a crystalline structure is formed on the surface; heating the coating to increase a molecular mobility of the coating thereby eliminating micro-cracks within the coating and making the coating more conformable to the electrode surface.
2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of preparing the surface of the electrode to promote adhesion of the steroid prior to the depositing step.
3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of mixing the steroid with a liquid medium prior to the depositing step.
4. The method of claim 3, wherein the liquid medium comprises an organic solvent.
5. The method of claim 3, wherein the mixture is a saturated solution.
6. The method of claim 4, wherein the solvent comprises acetone.
7. The method of claim 4, wherein the solvent comprises methanol.
8. The method of claim 4, wherein the solvent comprises chloroform.
9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steroid is sparingly soluble in water.
10. The method of claim 9, wherein the steroid comprises beclomethasone diproprionate anhydrous.
11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the steroid comprises dexamethasone.
12. The method of claim 1, wherein the heating step heats the coating to a transition point resulting in a solid-state phase change of the coating.
13. The method of claim 1, wherein the heating step comprises directing a stream of hot air over the coating.
14. The method of claim 1, wherein the heating step comprises applying radio-frequency energy to the coating.
15. The method of claim 1, wherein the heating step comprises applying microwave energy to the coating.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein the steroid comprises beclomethasone diproprionate anhydrous and the heating step comprises heating the coating to a temperature between approximately 144 degrees Celsius and approximately 146 degrees Celsius.
17. The method of claim 3, wherein the depositing step comprises dipping the electrode into the mixture of the steroid and the liquid medium.
18. The method of claim 3, wherein the depositing step comprises dispensing the mixture of the steroid and the liquid medium from a syringe.
19. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of mounting the electrode on a fixture prior to the heating step and the heating step further comprises controlling the heating time by means of a motorized platform to which the fixture, on which the electrode is mounted, is coupled.
20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of assembling the medical device electrode into a lead.
21. A medical device, comprising an electrode including a coating of steroid conforming to a surface of the electrode, the coating having been formed by depositing the steroid on the electrode surface and then heating the steroid to eliminate micro-cracks within a crystalline structure of the deposited steroid.
22. The medical device of claim 21 , further comprising an elongate lead body and wherein the electrode is a tip electrode terminating a distal end of the lead body.
23. The medical device of claim 22, wherein the tip electrode has a helical form.
24. The medical device of claim 22, wherein the tip electrode has a generally hemispherical form.
25. The medical device of claim 21, wherein the steroid comprises beclomethasone diproprionate anhydrous.
26. The medical device of claim 21, wherein the steroid comprises dexarπethasone.
