Abstract

A fluorescent lamp electronic ballast includes a DC to DC tlyback converter (16), a commutator circuit (18, 28 and 30), and a current sensor (20). The flyback converter (16) includes a tlyback transformer (TI) connected to a diode/capacitor (D1-D8. C2) combination, and includes a switch (U3) used to produce a flyback waveform that is rectified by the diode (D6-D8) and results in a high voltage DC output at the capacitor (C2). The commutator circuit receives the high voltage DC output and converts the high voltage DC output to an AC signal for operating the fluorescent lamp (24, 26). The current sensor (20) senses a DC lamp current from the output of the tlyback converter (16) and provides a current sense signal to the flyback converter (16). The flybick converter switch (16) is controlled based on the current sense signal. Preferred ballasts advantageously provide a continuously dimmable lamp load, a universal type ballast for a wide range of lamp loads and combinations, and programmed start.
