Abstract

A thermoplastic-glass composite laminate includes a top layer formed from a sheet of a polycarbonate material, a second intermediate layer formed of a cellulose-based material, such as wood, cloth, or printed paper, and a bottom layer formed of a glass sheet. The three layers are secured to one another by respective layers of a polyurethane adhesive. Upon curing in an autoclave, the layers are bonded to provide a cost-effective substitute for etched glass articles, with the further ready introduction of color, layered designs, and a wide variety of visual image effects to thereby provide a product with enhanced versatility.

Description

THERMOPLASTIC-GLASS COMPOSITE LAMINATE STRUCTURE
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION(S)
[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 60/410,105 filed September 12, 2002.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The invention relates a thermoplastic-glass laminate.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] Etched glass articles, as might be used for a frameless shower door, are gaining increased popularity. However, such etched glass articles are typically very expensive to manufacture. A need exists for a substitute product, that can visually emulate such etched glass articles while further offering comparative performance with regard to moisture resistance and low chemical reactivity..
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0004] A thermoplastic-glass composite laminate includes a top layer formed from a sheet of a polycarbonate material, a second intermediate layer formed of a cellulose-based material, such as wood, cloth, or printed paper, and a bottom layer formed of a glass sheet.
[0005] Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description of the preferred embodiments. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
[0006] The Drawing is a sectional view of first exemplary thermoplastic-glass laminate in accordance with the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0007] Referring to the Drawing, the exemplary thermoplastic-glass laminate
10 includes a thermoplastic top layer 12, a cellulose-based image layer 14, and a bottom layer 16 formed of a tempered glass sheet. The three layers 12,14,16 are bonded together using a suitable polyurethane adhesive 18, preferably cured in an autoclave at perhaps 2-3 atmospheres of relative pressure.
[0008] The top layer 12 is a sheet of PC (polycarbonate) of thickness that ranges from 0.125 inch to 0.375 inch, with 0.250 inch being most preferred. The PC can be modified with additives such as UV inhibitors or with pigments or other materials in order to render a decorative effect. The PC may also have an abrasion or scratch resistant coating to render it more durable.
[0009] The intermediate image layer 14 is formed, for example, of a wood veneer, cloth, or paper. This decorative portion of the laminate 10 may be either printed or decorative paper, fabric which has been printed or fabric which has a design or decorative effect due to its construction or a film onto which has been printed a decorative design or informational message. Due to the variety of possible materials and the effects that can be achieved the thickness of these materials can vary from 0.005 inch to 0.250 inch. It is noted that, where a printed ink is used, the ink is preferably compatible with the layer of polyurethane adhesive 18 used to bond the polycarbonate top layer 12 to the image layer 14.
[0010] The bottom layer 16 is tempered glass with thickness' that range from
0.125 inch to 0.375 inch with 0.250 inch being the most preferable.
[0011] In order to facilitate bonding and gas-off (as well as to facilitate adhesion of the resulting thermoplastic laminate to a structural substrate, when the thermoplastic laminate is acting as a "veneer"), the surfaces of the constituent layers and sheets are preferably provided with a desired surface finish. It will be appreciated, however, that the invention contemplates use, for example, of textured pinch rollers or transfer sheets (not shown) during constituent sheet manufacture/preparation to thereby impart a desired surface finish to the face of the, PC sheet, as necessary, thereby obviating any further surface preparation prior to lay up. Other methods for preparing the sheet surfaces prior to booking are also contemplated, including etching and laser scoring, and/or applying a surface charge to the constituent sheets to thereby cause the laid-up sheets to draw closer to one another.
[0012] While the above description discloses several preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated that the invention is susceptible to modification, variation and change without departing from the proper scope and fair meaning of the subjoined claims.
