Abstract

Disclosed are coated multifilament dental devices overcoated with biofilm-responsive, imbedded, particulate abrasives.

Claims

53 AMENDED CLAIMS[received by the International Bureau on 22 November 2004 (22.11.04); Claims 1-21 cancelled; claims 22-43 added (4 pages)] 22. A multifilament dental device substrate: compression coated with a saliva soluble, base coating; where said base coating has a biofilm responsive, dental abrasive, particulate overcoating imbedded thereon, wherein, during flossing, said base coated and dental abrasive, particulate overcoated, dental device, multifilament substrate releases said base coating and overcoating.23. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said base coating comprises an emulsion.24. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate overcoating is a solvent-free solid.25. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate comprises active parti culates.26. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate contains dusted thereon active ingredients.27. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said substrate is selected from the group consisting of PTFE, high density polyethylene, polyethylene, polypropylene, elastomeric substrates and combinations thereof.28. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate is selected from the group consisting of organic, inorganic, dental and active abrasives and mixtures thereof.29. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate is saliva soluble and selected from the group consisting of emulsion particulates, crystal-free particulates and mixtures thereof.30. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, 54wherein said dental abrasive particulate overcoating comprises from between about 2 and about 45 percent by weight of said coated substrate.31. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate overcoating has an Incidental Release Factor (IRF) of at least about 85 percent by weight.32. A multifilament dental device substrate as described in Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate overcoating has a Perceived Abrasive Factor (PAF) between about 1.5 and 4.0 microns.33. A compression coated multifilament dental device according to Claim 22, wherein said biofilm-responsive, dental abrasive particulate overcoating has an average particle size from between about 7 and 200 microns.34. A compression coated multifilament dental device according to Claim 22, wherein said biofilm-responsive, dental abrasive particulate overcoating has a particle size distribution from between about 5 and 300 microns.35. Compression coated multifilament dental devices according to Claim 22, wherein said dental abrasive particulate overcoating also contains additional solid particulates selected from the group consisting of water soluble waxes, water soluble nonionic surfactants, MICRODENT® emulsions, ULTRAMULSION® emulsions and mixtures thereof.36. Compression coated multifilament dental devices according to Claim 22, wherein said base coating contains a releasable antimicrobial.37. Compression coated multifilament dental devices according to Claim 22, wherein said biofilm-responsive dental abrasive particulate overcoating is selected from the group consisting of silica, pumice, alumina, calcium carbonate, di calcium phosphate dihydrate and mixtures thereof. 55 38. Compression coated multifilament dental devices according to Claim 22, wherein said biofilm-responsive dental abrasive particulate overcoating is an active abrasive selected from the group consisting of whitening, tartar control, stain fighting, hypersensitivity treatment abrasives and mixtures thereof.39. Saliva soluble, compression coated, texturized, multifilament dental devices having a denier between about 300 and about 1000 containing from between about 10 and about 100 mg yd of saliva soluble, emulsion base coating and having a biofilm-responsive, dental abrasive, particulate overcoating imbedded therein, wherein: said dental abrasive particulate coating comprises from between about 2 and about 45 percent by weight of said devices; said dental abrasive particulate has an Incidental Release Factor (IRE) of at least 85 percent by weight; and the Perceived Abrasive Factor (PAF) for said device is at least between about 1.5 and about 4.0.40. Coated multifilament dental devices according to Claim 39, wherein said emulsion base coating is MICRODΕNT®.41. Coated multifilament dental devices according to Claim 40, wherein said biofilm-responsive, dental abrasive, particulate overcoating contains a whitening substance.42. Coated multifilament dental devices according to Claim 39, wherein said saliva soluble, compression base coating and said particulate overcoating each contain tartar control substances.43. Saliva soluble, compression coated, texturized, multifilament, dental device substrates having impinged thereon a biofilm-responsive overcoating comprising: a particulate dental abrasive selected from the group consisting of silica, pumice, alumina, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate dihydrate and 56 mixtures thereof,
1.1 wherein said dental abrasive particulate: (a) is present at between about 2 and about 45 percent by weight of said device; (b) has a particle size between about 7 microns and about 200 microns; and (c) has a particulate size distribution from between about 5 microns and about 300 microns; wherein said saliva soluble, compression coated and dental abrasive, particulate overcoated, multifilament, dental device substrate, when used as a dental device: (a) removes biofilm; (b) indicates an Incidental Release Factor (IRF) of at least about 85 percent by weight; and (c) indicates a Perceived Abrasive Factor (PAF) of at least between about 1.5 and 4.0.
