Abstract

An improved packer has a tubular mandrel (20) with an outer diameter (22) essentially equal to the deflated inner diameter of an inflatable element (60) that surrounds the mandrel. The mandrel (20) includes fluid flow passages (23) that are adapted to cause at least a portion of pressurized fluid for inflating the element (60) to be introduced into the annular space between the packer and the mandrel (20) in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tubular mandrel (20).
