Abstract

A catheter (100) with a layer of pain reliever. The catheter (100) includes a proximal end, a distal end, and a tube (150) formed therebetween. The tube (150) has an exterior surface (156) and at least one interior surface defining a lumen extending through the tube (150). The catheter (100) further includes a layer (160) coated on the exterior surface (156) of the tube (150) and formed of a pain relieving material.

Description

A CATHETER WITH A LAYER OF PAIN RELIEVER
This application is being filed as PCT International Patent application in the name of Hualin, USA, a U.S. national corporation, Applicant for all countries except the U.S., and Jiatong Chen, Ge Lu and Tongchun Liang, all Chinese nationals and residents, Application for the designation of the U.S. only, on 21 December 2004.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention generally relates to a catheter, and more particularly, to a catheter having a layer of pain reliever. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Catheters as tubular medical instruments serve for investigating or treating hollow organs in the body of a living subject. Its uses include the drainage of urine from the bladder through the urethra of the living subject or insertion through a blood vessel into the heart of the living subject for diagnostic purposes. There are numbers of catheters available on the market, such as single-channel urinary catheters, multi-channel urinary catheters, and inflatable catheters. In practice, a catheter is inserted into a body cavity, duct, or vessel of a living subject to allow the passage of fluids or distend a passageway. There are disadvantages with the conventional catheters. For example, during the insertion of a catheter into the body of a living subject, friction between an exterior surface of the catheter and tissues where the catheter inserts through may cause the living subject great pain. The friction may injury mucous membranes of the tissues so that infection may occur thereon. On the other hand, the catheters are very inconvenient in practice due to the fiction. Therefore, a heretofore unaddressed need still exists in the art to address the aforementioned deficiencies and inadequacies.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The above-mentioned disadvantages of the prior art are overcome by the present invention, which in one aspect is a catheter having a layer of pain reliever. The catheter is adapted for insertion into a target of interest of a living subject to allow the passage of fluids or distend a passageway. In one embodiment of the present invention, the catheter has a proximal end, a distal end opposing the proximal end, and a tube formed therebetween. The tube has an outer surface and at least one interior surface defining a lumen extending therethrough the tube. The tube is flexible and is made of a bio-compatible material. The catheter further includes a layer coated on the exterior surface of the tube. The layer includes a material of relieving pain. The material of relieving pain includes Dicaine, Procaine, or a combination of them. In one embodiment, the layer further includes a lubricious composition that is mixed with the material of relieving pain at a predetermined percentage. The lubricious composition is non-soluble in water. In another embodiment, the layer also includes an antimicrobial composition that is mixed with the material of relieving pain at a predetermined percentage. The antimicrobial composition includes Norfloxacin. The layer of the catheter has a thickness in a range of about 0.01 to 1.5 mm. In another aspect, the present invention relates to a catheter for insertion into a target of interest of a living subject to allow the passage of fluids and/or distend a passageway. In one embodiment, the catheter includes a proximal end, a distal end opposing the proximal end, and a tube formed therebetween, where the tube has an exterior surface and at least one interior surface. The at least one interior surface defines a lumen extending therethrough the tube. The catheter further includes a layer coated on the exterior surface of the tube. The layer comprises a material of relieving pain, a lubricious composition, and an antimicrobial composition, wherein the material of relieving pain, the lubricious composition, and the antimicrobial composition are mixed together at predetermined percentages. The layer, in one embodiment, has a thickness in a range of about 0.01 to 1.5 mm. In one embodiment, the material of relieving pain is in an amount of about 20% to about 80% by weight, where the material of relieving pain includes Dicaine, Procaine, or a combination of them. The lubricious composition is in an amount of about 10% to about 40% by weight. In one embodiment, the lubricious composition is non-soluble. The antimicrobial composition is an amount of about 10% to about 40% by weight. In one embodiment, the antimicrobial composition comprises Norfloxacin. These and other aspects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of the preferred embodiment taken in conjunction with the following drawings, although variations and modifications therein may be affected without departing from the spirit and scope of the novel concepts of the disclosure.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention is more particularly described in the following examples that are intended to be illustrative only since numerous modifications and variations therein will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Various embodiments of the invention are now described in detail. Referring to the drawings, like numbers indicate like parts throughout the views. As used in the description herein and throughout the claims that follow, the meaning of "a," "an," and "the" includes plural reference unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Also, as used in the description herein and throughout the claims that follow, the meaning of "in" includes "in" and "on" unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. The description will be made as to the embodiments of the present invention in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, i accordance with the purposes of this invention, as embodied and broadly described herein, this invention, in one aspect, relates to a catheter with a layer of pain relief compensation on the exterior surface of the catheter. Referring to Figs. 1A and IB, a catheter 100 according to one embodiment of the present invention is shown. The catheter 100 has a proximal end 110 and a distal end 120 opposing the proximal end 110. In practice, the catheter 100 is inserted into a target of interest, such as a body cavity, duct, and vessel, of a living subject to allow the passage of fluids or distend a passageway, by the distal end 120. The living subject can be a human being such a patient or an animal. The catheter 100 further includes a tube 150 that is formed therebetween the proximal end 110 and the distal end 120. The tube 150 has an exterior surface 156 and at least one interior surface 154. The at least one interior surface 154 defines a lumen 155 extending therethrough the tube 150. The tube 150 is flexible and is made of a bio-compatible material. Furthermore, the catheter 100 has a layer 160 coated on the exterior surface 156 of the tube 150. The layer 160 is formed of a material of relieving pain. The layer 160 is adapted for pain relief compensation during the insertion of the catheter into the body of a patient. The layer 160 can continue to release the pain relieving material to the body afterwards. The material of relieving pain includes at least one of Dicaine, Procaine, and a combination thereof. In one embodiment, the layer 160 has a thickness in range from 0.05 mm to 1 mm. Additionally, the layer 160 of the catheter 100 includes a lubricious composition that is evenly mixed with the material of relieving pain at a predetermined percentage, where the lubricious composition is non-soluble in water. The non-soluble lubricious composition ensures not only to reduce the friction between an exterior surface of the catheter and tissues where the catheter inserts through, but also to prevent the coated layer of the catheter from inflating so as to extrude mucous membranes of the tissues when inserting the catheter into the body of a patient. Moreover, the layer 160 of the catheter 100 includes an antimicrobial composition is evenly mixed with the material of relieving pain at a predetermined percentage such that when the catheter is inserted into a target of interest of a living subject, the antimicrobial composition in the layer is gradually released to the target of interest so as to inhibit bacterial growth in the target of interest. In one embodiment, the antimicrobial composition includes Norfloxacin. In one embodiment, the material of relieving pain in the layer 160 of the catheter 100 is in an amount of about 20% to about 80% by weight. The lubricious composition in the layer 160 of the catheter 100 is in an amount of about 10% to about 40% by weight. The antimicrobial composition in the layer 160 of the catheter 100 is an amount of about 10% to about 40% by weight. The catheter 100 is made from conventional procedures in addition of the layer 160 of pain relief compensation coated on the exterior surface 156 of the tube 150 of the catheter 100. Many modifications and variations are possible in light of the above teaching. Accordingly, the scope of the present invention is defined by the appended claims rather than the foregoing description and the exemplary embodiments described therein.

Claims

CLAIMSWhat is claimed is:
1. A catheter 100 for insertion into a target of interest of a living subject to allow the passage of fluids and/or distend a passageway, comprising: a. a proximal end 110, a distal end 120 opposing the proximal end 110, and a tube 150 formed therebetween, wherein the tube 120 has an exterior surface 156 and at least one interior surface 154, the at least one interior surface 154 defining a lumen 155 extending therethrough the tube 150; and b. a layer 160 coated on the exterior surface 156 of the tube 150 and comprising a material of relieving pain.
2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the tube is made of a bio-compatible material.
3. The catheter of claim 2, wherein the tube 150 is flexible.
4. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the material of relieving pain comprises Dicaine.
5. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the material of relieving pain comprises Procaine.
6. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the layer 160 further comprises a lubricious composition, which is mixed with the material of relieving pain at a predetermined percentage.
7. The catheter of claim 6, wherein the lubricious composition is non-soluble in water.
8. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the layer 160 further comprises an antimicrobial composition, which is mixed with the material of relieving pain at a predetermined percentage.
9. The catheter of claim 8, wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises Norfloxacin.
10. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the layer has a thickness in a range of about 0.01 to 1.5 mm.
11. A catheter 100 for insertion into a target of interest of a living subject to allow the passage of fluids and/or distend a passageway, comprising: a. a proximal end 110, a distal end 120 opposing the proximal end 110, and a tube 150 formed therebetween, wherein the tube 120 has an exterior surface 156 and at least one interior surface 154, the at least one interior surface 154 defining a lumen 155 extending therethrough the tube 150; and b. a layer 160 coated on the exterior surface 156 of the tube 150, comprising (i). a material of relieving pain; (ii). a lubricious composition; and (iii). an antimicrobial composition, wherein the material of relieving pain, the lubricious composition, and the antimicrobial composition are mixed together at predetermined percentages.
12. The catheter of claim 11 , wherein the material of relieving pain is in an amount of about 20% to about 80% by weight.
13. The catheter of claim 12, wherein the material of relieving pain comprises Dicaine, Procaine, or a combination of them.
14. The catheter of claim 11, wherein the lubricious composition is in an amount of about 10% to about 40% by weight.
15. The catheter of claim 14, wherein the lubricious composition is non-soluble.
16. The catheter of claim 11 , wherein the antimicrobial composition is an amount of about 10% to about 40% by weight.
17. The catheter of claim 11, wherein the antimicrobial composition comprises Norfloxacin.
18. The catheter of claim 11 , wherein the layer 160 has a thickness in a range of about 0.01 to 1.5 mm.
