Abstract

Electro-optic displays (100) and a process of driving such displays, having a single electro-optic layer (106) and at least one electrode (108), wherein the electro-optic layer (106) exhibits different characteristics depending on the direction of application of the electric field. The electro-optic media (generally 106) may be electrophoretic, or more specifically a microcavity, particle-based electrophoretic media. Further, the electro-optic layer (106) may have different areas with different thicknesses, which each area has a different rate of change, when an electric field is applied across the layer (106).
