Abstract

A catalytic converter (10) for an internal combustion engine exhaust system comprises a single-piece, seamless metal housing (12) having tubulated gas inlet (14) and outlet ports (18) and a tubulated intermediate section (22) with a plurality of cascaded catalytic element (28) therein. The intermediate section (22) is connected to the inlet port (14) by an inlet transition section (24) and to the outl port (18) by an outlet transition section (26). The inlet (14) and outlet ports (18) and the inlet (24) and outlet transition (26) sections ar formed by swaging the ends of a seamless tube used to form the housing (12). Exhaust gas produced by operation of the engine passes into the converter (10) and through the catalytic element (28). A swaging process is used to form tubulated ends on the converter (10).
