Abstract

An allergy tester is described, comprising one, against the skin, completely or partially penetrating blade or needle for scratching of the skin in connection with allergy testing. The allergy tester comprises a holding device with at least one rotatable blade arranged for simultaneous scratching of the skin and supply of an allergy testing agent.

Description

Allergy tester
The present invention relates to an allergy tester, comprising one, against the skin, completely or partially penetrating blade or needle for scratching of the skin in connection with allergy testing.
Allergy is hypersensitivity towards specific materials in the environment. Normally the immune system defends us against bacteria, viruses and other materials, which are extrinsic to the body, but if one has an allergy, the immune system overreacts when the body is exposed to certain allergy causing materials. These can be materials in the environment which one breathes in, eats, touches or in another way comes into contact with. In people with allergy, the materials set off allergic reactions in the body such as, for example, high fever, asthma or eczema, and it is therefore important to find out which materials one is allergic to. This is normally carried out by taking blood samples, especially for food allergy and whether one has a general disposition for allergies, or by so-called skin prick tests (superficial scratches in, for example, the skin of the underarm) , especially at the upper airways, but can also be used at the lower airways and for food allergies. Often, this concerns a combination of two or more examinations.
The present invention especially directed to the last mentioned test method, i.e. scratching the skin for tests of different allergy causing materials. Different appliances for scratching the skin are known in connection with allergy testing. US 4,802,493, among others, shows an appliance that comprises a sticky band or tape with a skin-penetrating needle containing an allergy producing material. FR 2747558 shows a test device for allergy with a concave scratching unit arranged to scratch the skin. A test device with a number of needles/scratching units that are arranged circularly around an outlet opening for antigen is known from US 5,820,562, where the outlet opening and the scratching units are connected to a handle carrying a container with said antigen.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a device for allergy testing which is simple to use and which can be used for different forms of allergy testing or simultaneous testing of different allergies. It is a further object to provide an automatic, effective and hygienic allergy tester.
The abovementioned objects are achieved with a device described in the independent claim 1, in that the allergy tester comprises one, against the skin, completely or partially penetrating blade or needle for scratching the skin in connection with allergy testing, characterised by comprising a holding device with at least one rotatable blade arranged for simultaneous scratching of the skin and supply of an allergy- test agent.
Preferred embodiments are characterised by the dependent claims 2-10, in that the rotatable blade is mounted and is rotatable about an axis in that a pressure is applied at the one end of the blade, whereby the other end of the blade is arranged to rotate about said axis to scratch the skin. The other end of the blade is arranged, when it is rotated, in addition to scratching the skin, to open an adjoining ampoule containing an allergy testing agent.
The holding device can comprise a number of rotatable blades and/or ampoules arranged adjoining each other, and/or said number of rotatable blades and/or ampoules can be arranged in a row. Said number of rotatable blades and/or ampoules are preferably arranged in an opening in the holding device, where the opening can comprise a covering layer or foil to protect against the surroundings when the allergy tester is inactive. The holding device is preferably arranged in a handle encompassing a release mechanism for supply of said pressure to the one end of the blade. Said blade and ampoule can be integrated with each other, and said ampoule can be arranged to automatically be opened as the blade is rotated.
The invention shall now be described in more detail with reference to the enclosed drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a section of a device according to the present invention in an inactive position.
Figure 2 shows, corresponding to figure 1, a section of the device in an active position.
Figure 3 shows a set of ampoules for use in the present invention.
Figure 4 shows an embodiment of the present invention, viewed from the side.
Figure 5 shows an embodiment of the present invention viewed from below.
As the figures show, the present invention comprises an allergy tester with a holding device 10 arranged to lie against the skin 12 of a person who is to be allergy tested. The holding device comprises an opening/hole 14 in which is arranged one or more scratching units 16 in the form of, for example, one or more blades or the like, and a number of adjoining ampoules 18 containing allergy testing agents. When the allergy tester is inactive, the plurality of said blades and/or ampoules can be protected against the surroundings by a covering layer or foil 20.
The blade or blades 16 are preferably mounted about an axis 22 and are arranged to be rotatable when one end of the blade is subjected to a pressure, whereby the other end of the blade is rotated to scratch the skin, possibly through the foil 20, and simultaneously to open an adjoining ampoule containing the allergy testing agent, whereby the allergy testing agent is supplied to the area of the skin that has been scratched.
In an alternative embodiment, the blade and ampoules can be integrated with each other.
Figure 4 shows the holding device 10 connected to a handle 24. A release mechanism 26 can be connected to the holding device or handle for supply of a pressure to the one end of the blade 16, so that said blade is rotated or is turned. The release mechanism 26 can comprise a push button, which is connected with a rod (not shown) arranged to bring about said rotatable movement to the blade 16.
Figure 5 shows the present invention viewed from below, and shows a number of openings 14, with said scratching units 16 arranged in a row. Each scratching unit and ampoule can be released separately for supply of an allergy testing agent, so that the allergy tester can be used on several people, preferably if the protecting foil 20 is used, or several scratching units and ampoules can be released simultaneously to supply different allergy testing agents to the same person.
