Description

DESCRIPTION
FILTER FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES, IN PARTICULAR
DIESEL FUEL FED
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates in a general sense to a fuel filter for internal combustion engines, and in particular to a diesel fuel filter to be associated with diesel engines.
PRIOR ART
Diesel engine fuel is known to normally contain impurities, because of which the diesel engine feed system has to be provided with a suitable fuel filter.
Modern diesel fuel filters generally consist of a cup-shaped body closed by a cover and containing a coaxial filter cartridge generally of toroidal shape.
Between the cartridge and the cup-shaped body there are defined two chambers for passage of the diesel fuel to be filtered and of the filtered diesel fuel respectively, the first connected to the pump unit and the second to the injection system.
The chamber for passage of the diesel fuel to be filtered is normally provided by the inner region of the filter cartridge.
In addition to said impurities, diesel fuel also generally contains waxy materials, such as paraffin, which tend to thicken at relatively low temperatures, of the order of -50C, until they solidify at lower temperatures, of the order of -20/250C. Hence, if the engine remains inactive for a certain time at very low temperatures, said waxy materials such as paraffin separate from the diesel fuel and solidify, with consequent clogging of the filter, making it impossible to operate the engine.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to overcome this type of drawback by providing a fuel filter formed in such a manner as to delay paraffin formation. The invention attains said object by virtue of the characteristics defined in the claims.
Specifically the invention provides a diesel fuel filter, comprising an outer casing the interior of which is separated by a filtering baffle into two separate chambers to which a fuel inlet conduit and a fuel outlet conduit are connected respectively, at least a portion of the surface of said casing consisting of at least two walls separated by an interspace. Said interspace advantageously has a thermal insulating function so as to delay dispersion of the fuel heat towards the outside and hence maintain as long as possible the temperature of the fuel within the casing above the critical temperature which causes paraffin formation.
In a first embodiment of the invention, said interspace comprises at least one layer of thermally insulating material, such as neoprene. The thickness of the thermally insulating layer can be between 0.5 and 10 mm, and preferably between 1 and 3 mm. In a second embodiment of the invention, the insulating action of the interspace is achieved by maintaining its interior under vacuum, i.e. under conditions of air absence. In this latter case, two thermally insulating spacers are used to maintain the two walls separated. In a preferred embodiment, the filter casing comprises a cup-shaped body upperly closed by a cover, the surfaces of at least one of these parts consisting of two walls separated by said interspace with a thermally insulating function.
In more economical embodiments of the invention, only the surface of the cup-shaped body comprises two walls separated by an interspace, while the cover can be formed from a thermally insulating material.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The characteristics and the constructional merits of the invention will be more apparent from the ensuing description given with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings which illustrate a particular preferred embodiment by way of non-limiting example.
Figure 1 is a partial axial section through a diesel fuel filter according to the invention.
Figure 2 is the section N-Il of Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows an enlargement of one of the surfaces of the filter casing. Figure 4 is a section through a variant of the invention taken perpendicular to the filter axis.
Figure 5 shows an enlargement of one of the surfaces of the filter casing of the variant of Figure 4.
Figure 6 shows an enlarged detail of Figure 1.
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION From said figures, and in particular Figure 1 , it can be seen that the filter comprises a casing 1 consisting of a cup-shaped body 2 closed upperly by a cover 3. A gasket 8 of thermally insulating material is interposed between the rim of the cup-shaped body 2 and the cover (Figure 6), to lie mounted on the annular edge of the cup-shaped body 2. In place of the gasket 8, other embodiments of the invention comprise means for maintaining the casing interior thermally insulated from the external environment. The interior of the casing 1 houses a filtering baffle 4 which divides the interior of the casing 1 into two separate chambers 5 and 6 to which a fuel inlet conduit 7 and the fuel outlet conduit 9 are connected respectively. In the illustrated embodiment, said filtering baffle is in the form of a toroidal filter cartridge 40, however in other embodiments of the invention said baffle could have a different form. The filter cartridge 40 is supported lowerly by a plurality of lugs 10 and upperly presents a stub 41 which is inserted into a mating stub 30 branching from the lower surface of the cover 3.
With reference to Figures 2 and 3, the surfaces of the cover 3 and the surfaces of the cup-shaped body 4 both present two spaced-apart walls 11 and 12 separated by an interspace 13. In the embodiment of Figure 2 the interspace houses a layer of thermally insulating material 14 acting as an insulant.
In the illustrated embodiment this layer of thermally insulating material is of neoprene and has a thickness of 2 mm. The presence of said layer of insulating material delays heat dispersion towards the outside of the filter, hence the fuel, in this case diesel fuel, contained in the filter requires a longer time to reach the critical temperature at which paraffins begin to form.
Figures 4 and 5 show a variant of the first described embodiment, in which the interspace between the filter walls is maintained under vacuum. In this case a plurality of spacers 15 are inserted between the walls to maintain said walls separated from each other, and which would tend to approach each other by the effect of the vacuum.
