Abstract

The invention concerns a liquid treatment composition, applicable in layer by artists, decorators and users themselves, which dries up while forming a transparent film not affecting gloss, and rendering various supports suitable for receiving artistic or decorative painting. Said liquid composition is characterized in that it comprises: at least one modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule; at least one filler selected from the family of silicas introduced at a rate of 15 %, and preferably less than 8 %, in dry weight relative to the weight of the ready-to-use liquid treatment composition.

LIQUID COMPOSITION FOR PROCESSING MEDIA

The invention relates to the field of fine arts and decorative arts, particularly that of paint and primers used to treat surfaces. The paint has been applied for centuries on all types of supports for decorative purposes or protection of materials in fact there is a very wide range of products available on the market for the treatment of large surfaces in an artisanal or industrial way.

In the field of fine arts and decorative arts, of which there is essentially a question here, there are oil paints designed to dry very slowly by an oxidative reaction with oxygen in the air, containing binders dilutable with solvents, said solvents may for example be turpentine.

A known problem with oil paints is that the substrates used for painting must be treated with a composition so as to render them impervious to solvents and oils, and therefore a barrier to these components.

Conventionally it is used to paint with oil, these fabrics require a primer to be used, that is to say make them able to receive the paint in terms of wettability and fixing on the support. The fabrics are woven in different ways and are usually beige or cream, so it has been used for years a primary treatment called "gesso" and marketed by many manufacturers in order to prepare the paintings. This treatment formula "gesso" contains a very white and opaque filler, usually titanium oxide, and a synthetic acrylic binder, this composition is quite suitable for the treatment of fibrous substrates for which a white background is sought.

However today many artists, especially beginners, do not want to buy paintings to paint because of their cost and it develops a market for papers with appropriate treatments for the oil painting is applicable on their area. These papers are manufactured industrially by coating a carrier paper and then cut to various sales formats. These industrially processed papers are exclusively white or cream colored and present on the market with only a few surface textures. Artists, even amateurs, do not want to be limited in their creation by the support and wish to have a wide range of possibilities to develop their creativity.

A first problem is therefore to make available to artists a possibility of processing various media, freeing them from the small choice available on the market of papers previously processed industrially so that they can use, for example, embossed papers. , colored papers, tracing papers, cartons, laid papers, etc. Artists are not limited to cellulosic fibrous supports, however, and often wish to develop their creativity on other materials such as fabrics, minerals such as plaster, ceramic, cement, concrete, or other materials such as glass, metals, plastics, etc. The treatment formula known as "Gesso" can treat a wide variety of Of materials, including those described, however, this composition has the disadvantage of being white and opaque because of the pigments contained. For paintings this treatment is well adapted, however, on paper media, when in particular the use of colored papers or textured papers is desired this product leads to the clogging of the texture and the color change of the support. This composition applied to glass leads to a complete loss of transparency, which is not generally desired.

A second problem is therefore to be able to process any type of support and more particularly textured and / or colored papers or cartons, as well as glass and materials for which it is desirable to keep the appearance without the treatment composition denature visually the support. The aptitude for painting must of course be preserved.

It has been attempted, in order to solve the above problem, to employ varnishes or polymers without pigment additives, however this solution is not generally suitable because of the significant change in the gloss of the resulting support and because of the fact that treatment becomes too much barrier and no longer allows the attachment of the paint, or even causes difficulties in wetting the paint on the support. A third problem is that the treatment formulation must not alter the support by making it shiny and it must allow good wettability and good fixing of the paint. From a physico-chemical point of view, the treatment of a surface corresponds to the wettability study of said surface with a given surface tension liquid. Certain materials such as glass, metals, plastics, are known to be very difficult to wettable, aqueous base paints can not be easily applied without an adaptation of the surface tension of the paint.

A fourth problem is therefore to have a treatment solution that allows the use of aqueous base paints, such as gouache, acrylic, watercolor, etc., on substrates that are deemed non-wettable with water such as glass, metals and plastics, for example.

The invention therefore aims to solve these main difficulties, that is to say that it proposes a composition of treatment manually applicable by the end user by various means, thus opening to artists or decorators a wide range of possibilities of supports that can be used. The treatment does not substantially alter the color, gloss, and transparency of the medium thereby allowing application to glass and other transparent materials.

The present invention relates to a liquid treatment composition, applicable as a layer by the artists, the decorators and the users themselves, drying by forming a transparent film that does not affect the gloss, and making it suitable for the reception of the artistic painting or decorative different supports, which liquid treatment composition is characterized in that it comprises:

at least one modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule,

at least one filler selected from the family of silicas introduced at a rate of at most 15%, and preferably less than 8%, by dry weight relative to the weight of liquid treatment composition ready for use.

The advantages of the liquid treatment composition according to the invention are multiple:

• The composition makes it possible to treat any type of paper by forming a film resistant to solvents and oils which allows the painting with oil, without noticeable modification of the visual appearance of the paper, in particular its color and its brilliance. • The composition is easily wettable by water and thus allows after treatment of the support the use of all water-based paints, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, on materials normally impossible to paint with these paints. Artists and Decorators can therefore use usual paints on supports that would require special paints.

• The composition is transparent and does not change the brightness of the support which allows the users to use various materials for a total freedom of creation.

• Depending on the support chosen, it is possible to carry out a treatment with a specific composition for paints that can be easily washed with water, this is particularly the case for all water-impermeable materials such as glass, metals, plastics, tiles, etc.

In the text the term polyvinyl alcohol is sometimes abbreviated PVA, according to the name conventionally used. The invention aims to provide artists or decorators a composition of treatment for treating a variety of media and solve various problems.

The liquid treatment composition is adapted to be applied manually, mainly on small surfaces, with a brush, with a roller, with a knife, or even with a paint sprayer depending on the dimensions of the support to be treated, by individuals, artists and decorators.

The scope of the invention is not that of the industrial treatment of surfaces prior to marketing and in particular not coated or coated papers in paper mills or processors, nor that of protective treatments of aluminum or metals at manufacturers , or even that of the removal of protective film, on glass for example by glassmakers or transformers.

Many attempts have been made to find a treatment composition for applying any type of paint on any type of support and in order not to change the appearance and brightness of said media. This objective presents apparently irreconcilable constraints, such as good wettability with respect to oil paints and with respect to aqueous paints, or such as the treatment of porous surfaces and closed surfaces. For the purposes of the invention, the maintenance of the appearance characteristics of the support must be understood according to the following definitions: • Transparency after processing is appreciated for glass, glass and completely transparent media, in that it is always possible to read a text printed with an Arial font size 12 points, through the support treated, by transvision. • The maintenance of the texture characteristic is appreciated by the fact that the treatment does not lead to a variation of the maximum amplitude measured in microns between the recessed portions and the relief portions of the support by more than 30%, when the The composition is applied in a single layer, resulting in a dry film less than 50 microns thick.

• The maintenance of the gloss characteristic is appreciated by the fact that the treatment does not lead to a significant change in the measurement of this parameter, ie less than 30% of the initial value, when the measurement is feasible and significant, as well as by the visual perception of brightness of the support when it is matte before treatment. According to the invention and the criteria commonly accepted for each type of support, the application of the liquid treatment composition does not lead to a change of gloss level, for example in the case of paper a matte paper does not become glossy and a paper gloss does not become dull, although variations may be visually detectable between treated and untreated parts.

This maintenance of characteristics is assessed after drying of a deposit in a so-called normal layer of liquid treatment composition by a usual means such as brush, brush, roller, etc. Said so-called normal layer to be interpreted as a wet deposit leading a dried film of treatment composition between 0.1 and 2000 microns thick, and more particularly between 1 and 500 microns.

As regards the use of oil paints on porous and absorbent substrates such as paper, cardboard, fabrics, a critical problem to be solved is the necessary impermeability of materials with respect to solvents and oils, for their employment.

The liquid treatment composition as described and comprising a modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in its molecule leads to a dry film of barrier protection against fats and solvents, which can therefore be used in the treatment of papers to make them suitable for the application of oil paint, this polymer, because of its chemical nature including silicon, is also suitable for the treatment of glass and other minerals also containing silicon atoms. The wettability of the film in the dry state being adjusted by the addition of silica and optionally by polymers functioning as co-binders and included in the formulation in small amounts, or by specific adjuvants.

The modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in its molecule is preferably chosen from the family marketed by KURARAY. Preferably, the reference R-POLYMER® R 1130 is used.

The liquid treatment composition according to the invention contains silica in a small amount. This filler has various properties allowing to vary the gloss as well as the absorption capacity of the aqueous or organic liquids of the dry film of the treatment composition. It is indeed essential in most cases that the treatment is as discrete as possible and in particular does not cause any variation in the color and gloss of the support.

In the case of colored paper, for example, it is important that the silica be in sufficient quantity so that the dry film of the treatment composition does not alter the gloss of the support, a PVA film containing silicon in its molecule is by nature brilliant, silica degrades this brilliance. It is also necessary that the silica not be too large to lead to a white dried film as is the case for the "Gesso" above, moreover the silica reduces the barrier properties of the modified PVA and Beyond a certain threshold, the paper's aptitude for oil painting is lost.

The silica may be chosen from among all the existing qualities, whether they be precipitated, pyrogenic silicas, gel or colloidal silicas, according to the granulometry of the silica and its specific surface, the quantities to be added will be different and the effect in term of fixing of the binder of the painting also. The silica is chosen and optimized by specific application.

Preferably, according to the invention, the gel silicas have a large average particle size, that is to say more than 3 μ, and have a high oil uptake, such as SYLOID® 622, C807 and C809 from GRACE. or TIXOSIL® 365 from RHODIA SILICES, are more favorable for fixing oil paints and can be used for porous substrates, whereas very fine silicas and preferably colloidal silicas are used on transparent substrates and little porous such as glass and metals. Thus for the use of oil paints on porous substrates, such as cardboards, papers, fabrics and fabrics, plaster, etc., a fairly porous silica with a high average particle size will preferably be chosen from the composition. treatment, for example SYLOID® 622 silica marketed by the company GRACE, in this example the maximum amount tolerated in the formula, so that there is no loss of transparency of the dry film, is quite low.

To allow water-based painting on closed surfaces such as glass or plastics, it will be preferable to use colloidal silicas which do not modify the transparency of the dry film, these silicas can be introduced at higher rates in the composition. liquid.

The amounts of the materials introduced into the composition are generally expressed as a percentage of the dry amounts of said materials over the total weight of ready-to-use liquid processing composition. Which treatment can lead to variable applications on the surfaces according to their porosity, the means of application and the desired performance.

According to the invention, the liquid treatment composition contains the polyvinyl alcohol modified with silicon in the molecule at more than 0.5% by dry weight relative to the composition weight, and preferably at more than 2%, and the silica is introduced. at least 0.05% and preferably more than 0.1% by dry weight relative to the weight of ready-to-use composition. The silica is also introduced at a rate of at most 15% and preferably less than 8% by dry weight relative to the weight of ready-to-use composition, for the aforementioned reasons.

Advantageously according to the invention, the liquid treatment composition comprises, in addition to the polyvinyl alcohol modified with silicon in the molecule, and silica, a natural or synthetic co-binder polymer chosen as a function of the surface to be treated and the type of paint. used.

This co-binder polymer is introduced at least 0.1% by dry weight relative to the weight of ready-to-use liquid composition, which co-binder is selected in a non-limiting manner in the family of modified or unmodified polyvinyl alcohols, binders cellulosics such as, for example, carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose, starches, synthetic latices, guar or carob gums, alginates, carrageenans, polyacrylates, polyvinylpyrrolidones, gelatin, etc. For example, the liquid treatment composition that can be used to make all types of paper suitable for applying oil paint, and in particular very porous papers without affecting their gloss and their color, is characterized in that the co-binder polymer used is an unmodified polyvinyl alcohol or a synthetic latex for example acrylic.

Such polymers do not degrade the barrier against oils and solvents obtained with the modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule and make it possible to reduce the overall cost of formulation, it may possibly, in the case of synthetic latices, improve the water resistance of the composition, where desirable.

More specifically, the liquid treatment composition that can be used to treat papers and make them suitable for oil painting is characterized in that the modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule is introduced at least 3% by weight. dry weight relative to the complete ready-to-use composition, the silica is introduced at at most 2% by dry weight, and the co-binder polymer is a polyvinyl alcohol with a high hydrolysis rate introduced at least 3% by weight. dry weight relative to the composition.

According to another variant, the liquid treatment composition can be used to make it suitable for the application of aqueous or water-dilutable paints such as gouache, acrylic, watercolor, any type of glass, glass or mineral support containing a high proportion of silica. such a composition is characterized in that the co-binder polymer used is hydrophilic.

More specifically, this liquid treatment composition is characterized in that the modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule is introduced at at most 10% by dry weight relative to the composition, with a colloidal silica added at most 8% by weight. dry weight relative to the composition, and with a hydrophilic co-binder polymer being for example a polyvinyl alcohol, a polyvinylpyrrolidone, a starch, a gelatin, a cellulose derivative of the carboxymethylcellulose or methyl cellulose type, etc.

Depending on the type of paint applied and the type of support, the co-binder polymer is chosen from one family or another. Preferably, to propose to the users a formulation that is compatible with a wide range of paints and supports, the co-binder polymer is chosen from the family of polyvinyl alcohols that may or may not be modified and from the family of acrylic latices without excluding other polymers that may be useful for bring thixotropy to the preparation, viscosity or specific properties.

Among the properties sought in addition to the properties mentioned above, the co-binder polymer can bring to the formula an increased sensitivity to water, by the use of weakly hydrolyzed PVA, carboxymethylcelluloses or polyvinylpryrrolidones, for example. The co-binder polymer in the form of a synthetic latex may, on the contrary, give rise to water resistance or enhanced resistance to soiling, especially for example when using polymers of the polyurethane family. It can also be sought antistatic effect by the use of conductive polymers, special optical effects by the use of polymers having properties of filters, anti-UV or polarizers of light, etc. All these polymers co-binders being preferably introduced into liquid compositions deposited on transparent or translucent substrates so that their effect vis-à-vis the light is perceptible, on windows or mirrors for example.

The liquid treatment composition may contain, in addition to the aforementioned components, adjuvants, alone or as a mixture, such as surface tension regulating agents, antifungal agents, preservatives, binders crosslinking agents, solubilized dyes or pigmentary, fluorescent or phosphorescent compounds, thermochromic or photochromic, iridescent effect pigments, pearlescent, metameric, etc. in amounts not affecting or little transparency of said composition after application to the medium to be painted. Said adjuvants being in amounts of less than 10% of the dry weight of the complete ready-to-use composition.

All these additives make it possible to improve the functionality of the treatment composition or even to transform it into a decoration composition in itself, in the case of the addition of dyes, iridescent, pearlescent or metameric pigments such as, for example, those sold by MERCK under the brands IRIODINE®, XIRALLIC®, COLORSTREAM®, MIRAVAL®, etc.

The addition of dyes or pigments with special effects may make it possible to produce colored, iridescent, variable optical effects, etc. that can be used for decoration, as is, or in combination with a subsequent step consisting of a paint application at the surface of the treated part.

The liquid treatment composition according to the invention makes it possible to treat various surfaces such as wood, particle board, metals, canvas or fabrics, tiles or ceramics, fiber agglomerates and plastics. EXAMPLE 1

If we consider the artist who uses the technique of oil painting and wishes to use as support a pastel colored laid paper as sold in paper mills, according to an advantageous example of embodiment of the invention, the liquid treatment composition to be used comprises the following products in aqueous phase:

• Modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule, R POLYMER® R 1130 from KURARAY introduced at 5% by dry weight relative to the complete composition, which complete composition thus contains 50 g dry PVA modified with silica for 1000 g of finished liquid treatment composition, ready for use,

A silica SYLOID® C807 from the company GRACE introduced at 0.6% by dry weight relative to the composition,

A co-binder polymer in the form of a polyvinyl alcohol with a high hydrolysis rate, MOWIOL® 28/99 polyvinyl alcohol sold by the company SEPPIC, introduced at 5% by dry weight relative to the composition. Advantageously, a preservative may be added to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold, for example the product INTACE B48 marketed by the company INTACE at the rate of 0.1% by weight of product as marketed with respect to the complete composition.

For the manufacture of the liquid treatment composition the silica is dispersed in water, cold, with vigorous stirring before adding the binders, the two PVA used are baked in a mixture at a temperature of about 95 ° C.

The liquid composition thus prepared has a viscosity comparable to that of a varnish and can be used as it is.

The artist applies the liquid treatment composition on the above laid paper by means of a brush in the form of a flat brush, over the entire surface and allowed to air dry for one hour.

Once dried, it can be seen that the treatment composition does not alter the texture of the paper, the shepherds are still visible, the paper has not become glossy as would be the case with a medium used to dilute the paints. The treatment does not alter the color of the paper, which remains very close, from the point of view of appearance, of its state before treatment.

The treatment has the effect of making the barrier paper against oils and solvents. To check the good aptitude with respect to the oil painting, the following test is carried out: A drop of linseed oil and a drop of turpentine oil are deposited on the treated surface and on untreated paper, turpentine is found to immediately penetrate into the untreated paper while it remains on the surface of the treated paper until complete evaporation without any trace of penetration being observed. Linseed oil is rapidly absorbed to form a greasy stain on the untreated paper while on the treated paper it remains without penetrating as long as the test is continued.

The oil painting is applied without difficulty and dries in the usual time, comparable to the drying time on canvases.

Functionally, the liquid treatment composition behaves identically to "gesso" with the specific advantages of this composition which are to leave the support after treatment as close as possible to its initial state in terms of color, gloss and texture. EXAMPLE 2

An individual wishes to decorate his windows with a paint type gouache, dilutable with water. This type of paint is not applicable on windows, the composition of the gouache is not at the right surface tension to spread properly on glass. The application of the liquid treatment composition according to the invention makes it possible to solve the problem and to create an attachment layer for water-based paint.

For this it is used a liquid treatment composition, applied to the flat brush on the surface to be painted, containing the following components:

Modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule, POLYMER® R 1130 from KURARAY introduced at 3% by dry weight relative to the complete composition,

A colloidal silica SNOWTEX® 50 sold by the company SEPPIC introduced at 3% by dry weight relative to the complete ready-to-use composition, a co-binder polymer added to allow easy cleaning of the treated part: a polyvinylpyrrolidone KP PVP sold by the company ISP in a liquid form, this polymer is introduced at 6% by dry weight relative to the ready-to-use composition.

The ready-to-use liquid treatment composition contains 12% dry matter. The layered and dried liquid treatment composition has a high transparency, on which the gouache water-based paint can be extended without difficulty, the wettability of the treated surface being excellent. When the decoration has to be removed, it is sufficient to wet the surface with water with any cleaning liquid, for example a dishwashing product, to easily remove all of the treated surface.

Applying the liquid treatment composition to a non-wettable surface by water allows any amateur or professional decorator to apply any type of paint to a treated glass surface. It is not necessary to use paints specially adapted for windows, and whose shades are quite limited, classic paints are quite suitable. The treatment described in this example has the further advantage of being easily cleaned with water. EXAMPLE 3

An amateur artist wants to use a primer to paint with oil paints and watercolors or watercolor paints on colored papers and mirrors, so on paper and glass with two categories of painting. A liquid treatment composition advantageously combining all the techniques on all the supports, contains:

MOWIOL® 4/98 marketed by the company SEPPIC ₁ this polymer being introduced at 5% by dry weight relative to the ready-to-use composition.

Advantageously, a preservative may be added to prevent the development of bacteria and molds, for example the product

INTACE B48 marketed by the company INTACE at a rate of 0.1% by weight of product as marketed compared to the complete composition. The artist applies the liquid treatment composition to a textured paper, such as a grainy watercolor paper, using a flat brush, over the entire surface and allowed to air dry for one hour. Once dried it is found that the treatment composition does not alter the texture of the paper, the reliefs are still visible, the paper did not become glossy as would be the case with a medium used to dilute the paints. The treatment does not alter the color of the paper, which remains very close, from the point of view of appearance, of its state before treatment. The treatment has the effect of making the paper barrier against oils and solvents, the watercolor paper thus treated has become compatible with the use of oil paints.

The treatment composition is also applied to a mirror so as to perform a pre-treatment. Once dried, the treatment composition has a high transparency, on which the gouache water-based paint can be applied without difficulty, the wettability of the treated surface being excellent.

When the decoration has to be removed, it is sufficient to wet the surface with water containing a small quantity of any cleaning liquid, for example a product for washing dishes, to quickly remove all of the treated surface, including paint. .

The previously defined liquid treatment composition makes it possible to treat surfaces as different as glass and paper and thus enables the artists to use the usual paints on substrates that are not. Several variants can be envisaged for the liquid treatment composition, in particular by modifying the proportions of the main constituents and by adding functional products, all these modifications are feasible without departing from the scope of the invention.

The liquid treatment composition may be applied by any means known to the artists and decorators and in particular brushes, brushes, knives, rollers, spray guns, airbrushes, soaking devices and all devices that can be used by artists, decorators and decorators. users themselves, without departing from the scope of the invention.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described and represented by way of examples, but it also includes all the technical equivalents as well as their combinations.

5- liquid treatment composition according to claim 4 characterized in that the modified polyvinyl alcohol containing silicon in the molecule is introduced at least 3% by dry weight relative to the composition, the silica is introduced at 3% or less in dry weight relative to the composition, and the co-binder polymer is a polyvinyl alcohol with a high hydrolysis rate introduced at least 3% by dry weight relative to the composition.

A liquid treatment composition according to any one of the preceding claims wherein alone or in admixture are added surface tension regulating agents, antifungal agents, binders crosslinking agents, dyes in solubilized or pigmented forms, compounds fluorescent or phosphorescent, thermochromic or photochromic, iridescent, pearlescent, metameric pigments, in amounts of less than 10% of the dry weight of the complete ready-to-use composition.

7- liquid treatment composition according to claim 1 wherein the treated surfaces are wood, metals, canvas or fabrics, tiles or ceramics, fiber agglomerates and plastics.
