Abstract

The invention relates to a level gauge (5, 9, 11) operating according to the propagation time principle, and to a method for the initial operation thereof. According to the invention, the initial operation is carried out in a simple manner, whereby a user specifies a minimum set of parameters, the level gauge (5, 9, 11) carries out a reference measurement for which an emission signal (S) is sent towards a filling product (1) and the reference echo signal (R) thereof is recorded, and the level gauge (5, 9, 11) derives additional parameters from the pre-determined parameters and the reference measurement.
