Abstract

A fastener (12) and a bone fixation assembly (18) for the internal fixation of vertebral bodies such as a pedicle screw (12) provided which allows a detachable tulip (18) to be provisionally locked to a pedicle screw (12), while separately, the rod (26) securely locks to the tulip (18). According to one exemplary embodiment, the tulip assembly (18) includes a tulip body (20) and an inner tulip member (24), the tulip body (20) having a non-circular surface (36) disposed on an outer surface. Additionally, a fastener (22) is coupled to the tulip assembly (18) and positionable to retain the tulip assembly (18) on thehead (16) of a screw (12). Further, a cap (40) having an outer surface and a plurality of inner protrusions (46) is provided, wherein the plurality of inner protrusions (46) are configured to mateably connect to the non-circular surface (36) on the tulip body (20) to compress the tulip assembly (18) and secure a rod (26).
