Abstract

The invention relates to the provision of apparatus for the reception of potentially hazardous discarded items such as, for example, needles or syringes which may have been used by drug users. The apparatus is provided in a form to be capable of being mounted in external unprotected environments and to be able to withstand vandalism and/or other attempts to damage the apparatus. The apparatus comprises a body portion (4) which is typically secured to a surface such as a pavement and a lid (6), said apparatus including a cavity therein for the reception of the items. The lid has an opening (10) and a portion (8) which can be moved between an open position to allow items to be placed through the opening and a closed condition. A further aspect of the invention relates to the provision of magnetic locking means.
