Abstract

A safety syringe, comprising : a body unit to which a needle is in use fitted; and a plunger unit which Is movably disposed to the body unit, wherein the plunger unit comprises first and second plunger members which are movable relative to one another between a first, operative configuration and a second, retracted inoperative configuration in which the needle is retracted into the body unit, a biasing element for rearwardly biasing one of the plunger members to a retracted position, and a retention member for normally retaining the plunger members in the operative configuration and being operative to release the one of the plunger members such as to be driven to the retracted position under the bias of the biasing element, wherein the one of the plunger members includes a locking member which locks to the needle when the plunger unit is depressed beyond a predeterminable position in the body unit, such that, when the one of the plunger members is released and driven to the retracted position, the needle is retracted into the body unit.
