Abstract

Protective clothing (10), such as a shin guard, has a semi-rigid elongate pad (11) with a sleeve (12) of an elastic material secured to one end of the pad (11). The sleeve (12) has a length at least equal to that of the pad (11). The pad (11 ) is curved laterally of its length, and the sleeve (12) is disposed to that side of the pad (11) that is concave. The pad (11) and the sleeve (12) have substantially the same radius of curvature. The pad (11) is of a rubber or plastics material. The pad (11) has longitudinally extending grooves (15) to provide a degree of lateral flexibility to the pad (11), and a longitudinally extending stiffening rib (16) is disposed centrally within the pad (11). With the pad (11) placed against the leg (21), or other body part to be protected, the sleeve (12) is rolled over the pad (11 ) and leg (21) to retain the pad (11 ) in position and give compression and support to the leg (21).

Description

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
This invention relates to protective clothing, and in particular to protective clothing for use by sportsmen and women. The invention has particular, but not exclusive, application to protective clothing for use by soccer players for the protection of the lower leg or shin.
Many sportsmen and women wear protective clothing when participating in their sport. Often this consists of a substantially rigid pad, shaped to the part of the body to be protected. In the case of soccer players, generally such players wear shin pads to protect their lower legs or shins. A shin pad is placed against the shin and the player then pulls up a sock up the leg and over the shin pad, which serves to hold the shin pad in place between the sock and the shin. However, this arrangement does not protect the player's ankle, and often two pairs of socks are worn, the second pair being left folded around the ankle. This has the disadvantage that the player's boots may be too tight and uncomfortable, leading to rubbed and sore feet, blisters and the like. In addition, in hot weather, it is not uncommon for players, in an effort to stave off the effects of cramp, to roll down their socks and remove the shin pads. This of course, leaves their shins prone to injury from contact with the boots of other players. Another problem not addressed by the use of shin pads or similar protective clothing for other parts of the body, is that of strained, pulled or otherwise injured muscles. This can be a serious problem in some sports, and any measures taken to avoid or overcome such problems requires a completely separate solution.
It is an object of the present invention to provide protective clothing that overcomes to a significant extent the abovementioned problems of known protective clothing.
The invention provides protective clothing comprising a semi-rigid elongate pad having secured to one end thereof a sleeve of an elastic material, wherein the sleeve has a length at least equal to that of the pad.
The pad may have a lower edge secured to an upper edge of the sleeve, and the lower edge of the pad may extend along a part of the upper edge of the sleeve. Alternatively, the pad may have an upper edge secured to a lower edge of the sleeve, and the upper edge of the pad may extend along a part of the lower edge of the sleeve. The length of the pad may be substantially 20cm. The sleeve may have a length of substantially 30cm. The pad may be curved laterally of its length, in which case the sleeve may be disposed to that side of the pad that is concave. The pad and the sleeve may have substantially the same radius of curvature, which may be substantially 4cm. The pad may be tapered towards its lower edge. The sleeve may be of a textile material, and may be a woven textile material. The textile material may comprise an elastic material, and may comprise elasticated fibres. The elasticated fibres may be elastane, Lycra (Registered Trade Mark) or a combination thereof. The sleeve may have a hem at the upper edge and at a lower edge thereof.
The pad may be of a rubber or plastics material, and may have longitudinally extending grooves therein to provide a degree of lateral flexibility to the pad. A longitudinally extending stiffening rib may be disposed centrally within the pad. The pad may have a layer of a compressible material on the concave surface thereof, and the layer may comprise a sheet of foam housed in a covering of textile material.
The sleeve may be detachably secured to the pad, and may be secured by means of cooperating touch and close fastenings on the sleeve and pad.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 is a front elevation of one embodiment of protective clothing, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the protective clothing of Fig. 1 , and Figs. 3 to 6 are successive illustrations of a person putting on the protective clothing of Figs 1 and 2
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, there is shown an article of protective clothing in the form of a shin guard 10 for the protection of the lower leg of a soccer player. The shin guard 10 comprises a pad 11 having a compression sleeve 12 attached by its upper edge 13 to a lower edge 14 of the pad 11. The attachment may be permanent, or may be detachable, for example by means of co-operating touch and close fastenings 23, e.g. of Velcro (Registered Trade Mark), on the pad 11 and sleeve 12. The sleeve 12 extends beyond the pad 11 , when the shin guard 10 is not in use. The pad 11 is semi-rigid and is of a rubber or plastics material. Preferably the pad 11 is moulded, and has longitudinally extending grooves 15 to give a degree of lateral flexibility. The sleeve 12 has a length at least equal to that of the pad 11 , which is approximately 20cm. The sleeve 12 has a length of substantially 30cm. The pad 11 is curved laterally of its length, and the sleeve 12 is disposed to that side of the pad 11 that is concave. The pad 11 and the sleeve 12 have substantially the same radius of curvature, which is substantially 4cm. The pad 11 is tapered towards its lower edge 14. A longitudinally extending stiffening rib 16 is disposed centrally within the pad 11. The pad 11 has a layer of a compressible material 17 on the concave surface thereof, and the layer 17 comprises a sheet of foam housed in a covering of textile material. The compression sleeve 12 is of a textile material, and is preferably a woven textile material. The textile material comprises an elastic material, such as elasticated fibres. The elasticated fibres may be elastane, Lycra (Registered Trade Mark) or a combination of such materials. The sleeve 12 has a hem 18 at the upper edge 13 and lower edge 19 for strength and durability.
Use of the protective shin pad 10 is as follows. Firstly, the foot 20 is placed through the sleeve 12 from the upper end 13 towards the lower end 19 as shown by the block arrow A in Fig. 3. The pad 11 is placed against the front of the leg or shin 21. The sleeve 12 is then rolled upwardly, over the pad 11 and the leg 21 , as shown by the block arrow B in Fig. 4. This serves to hold the pad 11 in place on the leg 21. In addition, the elasticated compression sleeve 12 serves to support the calf muscles and tendons, and lower the risk of pulled muscles, overstretched or strained tendons and the like injuries. The sleeve 12, being at least as long as the pad 11 , completely covers the pad 11 as shown in Fig. 5. The sock 22 is then put on the foot 20 and pulled up over the pad 11 and sleeve 12, as shown in Fig. 6. If the player wishes to roll down the sock 22, for example in hot weather, the sleeve 12 will hold the pad 11 in place, thereby maintaining the protection for the leg 21. Alternatively, the sleeve 12 may be left folded around the ankle for protection of that part of the leg 21 , whilst the sock 22 serves to keep the pad 11 in place on the leg 21.
Other embodiments of protective clothing in accordance with the invention will be readily apparent to persons skilled in the art. For example, the pad 11 and sleeve 12 may be dimensioned and shaped to fit to other parts of the body, for example the lower or upper arm, or even the body. The pad 11 may have its upper edge secured to the lower edge of the sleeve 12, in which case the upper edge of the pad 11 may extend along a part of the lower edge of the sleeve 12. After placing such a pad 11 against the part of the body to be protected, the sleeve 12 is then rolled downwardly over the pad 11. In each case, the pad 11 will remain in place on the part of the body to be protected without assistance from any other clothing worn by the person.
