Abstract

The present invention relates to the disposal and retention time of gaseous exhausts from a gasifier and associated equipment in order to meet regulatory requirements on the dwell time for exhaust gases before their release to the atmosphere. In particular, the unit comprises a vessel into which one or more exhausts from a gasification and energy producing plant are introduced to retain them for a required minimum period. The dwell time is determined by the size of the vessel and the speed of the flow of the gas through the vessel which is further controlled by the provision of baffles within the vessel.

Description

GAS RETENTION VESSEL
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to the disposal of gaseous exhausts from a gasifier and associated equipment in order to meet regulatory requirements on the dwell time for exhaust gases before their release to the atmosphere. In particular, the unit comprises a vessel provided with baffles, into which one or more exhausts from a gasification and energy producing plant are introduced to retain them for a minimum required period determined by the size of the vessel and the speed of the flow of the gases through the vessel and its baffles.
In preferred embodiments of this invention, hot gas from a gasification unit is mixed with exhaust gas from a gas engine or gas turbine by being introduced tangentially into a cylindrical refractory lined retention vessel containing baffles to ensure thorough mixing of the gases, and effect the desired temperature and minimum required dwell time within the vessel.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a first preferred vessel construction.
Figure 2 is a plan sectional view at A-A of figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan sectional view at B-B of figure 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical section of a second preferred vessel construction.
Figure 5 is a plan sectional view at C-C of figure 4
In the first preferred embodiment the retention vessel consists of a vertical steel cylinder 1 provided with refractory lining 2 and with two inlet pipes 3 and 4 at the upper end of the vessel, arranged substantially tangentially to the vessel. Inlet pipe 3 carries the high temperature exhaust gas from a gasification plant after they have been used to heat a rotating retort and subsequently cleaned. Inlet pipe 4 carries the lower temperature exhaust gas from a gas engine. A baffle plate 5 is provided to extend to the vessel wail and has a central aperture 6 through which the gases flow. A further series of baffles 7 is provided with off-set apertures 8 to effect thorough mixing of the introduced gases. Finally, an outlet pipe 9 is provided at the base of the vessel, extending towards the centre of the base of the vessel for the emission of the mixed exhaust gases which are filtered and passed via a fan into a chimney stack. The vessel is designed to achieve a retention time of a minimum of two seconds at a cpmbined gas temperature of 85O0C after thorough mixing.
In a second preferred embodiment, the baffles are formed by substantially concentric walls (5) of refractory material with appropriately spaced apertures (6) achieve the required retention time. By adjusting the size of the vessel and the number, form and position of the baffles, a desired dwell time can be obtained for the gas flow.
Whilst the invention has been described in detail in terms of specific embodiments thereof, it will be apparent that various changes and modifications can be made by one skilled in the art without departing frpm the spirit and scope thereof.
