Abstract
A bearing block (40) is provided that may be used with a drag bit body (10) or frame to limit depth of cut of cutters on a bit. The bearing block is designed so that it may be interchangeably replaced or repaired without necessitating alteration to a standardized bit frame. The interchangeable bearing block may be used to provide a target depth of cut (TDOC) and/or a selected contact or rubbing area (32) to support weight on bit and limit depth of cut (DOC) for improving drilling performance of a bit. The interchangeable bearing block brings manufacturing selectability by providing. a customizable product in terms of depth of cut selection and cutter penetration control for different formations, which is suitable for use with a common bit frame. A rotary drill bit assembly, a unitary cone insert bearing block for a drill bit, and a bit frame are also provided.
Claims
1. A bearing block (40) for a rotary drill bit (10) for subterranean drilling, the bearing block (40) characterized Ln that: a body, comprising: an interface surface (34) for securing to a complementary structure on a blade (18) of a bit frame (110) to form a drill bit (10), the interface surface (34) comprising a body side wall (35) and a support surface (37), the body side wall (35) and the support surface (37) configured for attachment to the complementary structure in the form of a blade pocket (126,128) of a blade (18) of the bit frame (110, 302); a rubbing surface (40) having at least one rubbing area (42) for contacting a formation during drilling with the drill bit (10) under applied weight on bit; at least one body thickness (44) as determined by a distance between a portion of the rubbing surface
(40) and a bottom (37) of the interface surface (34).
2. The bearing block (40) according to claim 1, further characterized in that one or more wear-resistant elements (52,54) are located on the at least one rubbing area (42).
3. The bearing block 940) according to claim 1 , wherein the support surface (37) characterizes a plurality of stepped surfaces (131, 132, 133).
4. The bearing block (40) according to claim 3, further characterized in that one or more cutter pockets (205) are located proximate a rotationally leading side of the body as mounted to the bit frame (110, 302) .
5. The bearing block (40) according to claim 4, wherein the one or more cutter pockets (205) are located substantially on the rubbing surface (32, 72, 73, 74) and extend into the rotationally leading side (35).

The bearing block (40) according to any one of claims 4 and 5, further characterized in that one or more target depth of cuts CTDOCs) (348), each TDOC (348) are determined by the distance between the at least one rubbing area (42) and an outermost edge of a cutting face of a cutter (204) as disposed in the one or more cutter pockets (205).
7. The bearing block (40) according to any one of claims 4 through 6, further characterized in that one or more polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters (204), each PDC cutter (204) are coupled to one of the cutter pockets (205).
8. The bearing block (40) according to any one of claims 4 through 7, wherein the at least one body thickness is associated with two or more cutter pockets (205). -13-
9. The bearing block (40) according to any one of claims 1 through 8, wherein the rubbing surface (42) includes a body thickness for the at least one rubbing area (52, 54).
10. The bearing block (40) according to any one of claims 1 through 9, wherein the at least one rubbing area (52, 54) is configured as one of flat, tilted and convex.
11. The bearing block (40) according to any one of claims 1 through 10, wherein the at least one rubbing area (52, 54) is characterized by a plurality of rubbing areas.
12. The bearing block (40) according to claim 11, wherein each of the plurality of rubbing areas (52, 54) are characterized by at least one of a different body thickness, a different surface area and a different configuration.
13. The bearing block (40) according to any one of claims 1 through 12, characterized by a composite material.
14. The bearing block (40) according to claim 13, wherein the composite material is a thermally stable polycrystalline (TSP) layer (156) substantially characterized by the rubbing surface (52, 54), and a tungsten carbide layer (158) substantially comprising the interface surface (34).
15. A rotary drill bit assembly (10) for subterranean drilling, characterized in that the bearing block according to anyone of claims 1 through 14 and a bit frame (110, 202), the bit frame (110, 202, 302) characterized by a plurality of blades (18), a plurality of cutters (204) disposed on the plurality of blades (18), and at least one receptacle (28) located in at least one blade (18) of the plurality, the receptacle (28) securely receiving the bearing block (40), an attachment orientation feature on the body and a complementary feature on the at least one blade (18), wherein the attachment orientation feature selectively characterizes the shape of the interface surface (34).
16. The rotary drill bit assembly (10) according to claim 15, wherein the interface surface (34) of the interchangeable bearing block (40) is secured to the receptacle (28) of the bit blade (18) by interference fit.
17. The rotary drill bit assembly (10) according to any one of claims 15 and 16 further characterized in that another interchangeable bearing block (40) is secured to a receptacle in another blade (18) of the plurality of blades (18).
18. The rotary drill bit assembly (10) according to claim 17, wherein the interchangeable bearing block (40) and the another interchangeable bearing block (40) are mutually joined forming a cone insert bearing block (40) extending between at least two blades (18) of the plurality of blades (18).
