Description

System for distributing printed publications
The present invention relates to a system for distributing printed publications such as, for example, papers, journals, magazines, etc. In the prior art devices are known for distributing printed publications comprising a container inside which the publications to be distributed are stored.
The container is provided with a prepayment mechanism by means of which a user, by inserting coins or banknotes for an amount corresponding to the cost of the publication, is enabled to remove from the container a copy of the publication contained therein.
The aforesaid devices do not enable the quantity of copies still available therein to be checked automatically and do not enable the person managing the devices to monitor the rate of removals from each device.
The present invention aims to provide a system for distributing printed publications that enables the manager of the system to check, in real time, the number of copies distributed by each device in addition to being able to compile statistics on the distribution of copies from each device, or groups of devices.
The system also has to be able to provide readers with additional services such as, for example, purchase electronic copies of printed publications, participation in games, competitions, etc.
According to the present invention there is provided a system for distributing publications, comprising at least a distributing device in which there is stored a plurality of copies of a printed publication to be distributed, arranged in at least a pile, characterised in that the distributing device is provided with detecting means to detect a datum on the basis of which the number of copies inside the distributor can be determined. This enables the manager of the system to be able to ascertain at any moment the number of residual copies inside the distributing device.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the detecting means comprises load cells suitable for detecting the weight of said at least a pile of copies. This enables the number of copies in said at least a pile to be determined by knowing the weight of each copy. According to a further advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the detecting means comprises infrared detecting means suitable for detecting the distance of the top of said at least a pile from a reference surface inside the distributing device. This enables the height of the pile to be determined on the basis of said distance and the number of copies in the pile to be determined by knowing the thickness of each copy.
According to a still further advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the detecting means comprises photocell means, suitable for detecting the height of said at least a pile inside said container. This enables the number of copies in the pile to be determined by knowing the thickness of each copy.
The device according to the invention further comprises command means that is suitable for programming the driving of said detecting means at preset intervals of time that are settable remotely, and storage means suitable for storing the data detected by said detecting means.
The device according to the invention further comprises transmission means operationally associated with said programming means and with said storage means, said transmission means being suitable for transmitting the data stored in said storage means to further storage means in a remote location. The transmission means can be suitable for connecting to a cable or optic-fibre data transmission network or to a wireless transmission network. According to an advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the transmission means is suitable for connecting to a portable wireless transmitting/receiving device. The invention will be disclosed in greater detail below by way of non- limiting example, with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic section view of a first embodiment of a distributing device according to the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view of a detail of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a schematic section view of a second embodiment of a distributing device according to the invention; Figure 4 is a schematic section view of a third embodiment of a distributing device according to the invention; Figure 5 is a schematic view of an operating mode of the system according to the invention;
Figure 6 is a schematic view of a further operating mode of the system according to the invention;
Figure 7 is a schematic view of a still further operating mode of the system according to the invention. With reference to Figure 1 and to Figure 2, the system according to the invention comprises at least a distributing device 1 for distributing printed publications comprising a container 2 inside which there is arranged at least a pile 3 of copies of a printed publication, for example, a daily newspaper, a magazine, etc.
The pile 3 rests on a base 4 associated with load cells 5 by means of which the weight of the pile 3 is detected. The weight is detected at intervals of time that are preset and settable remotely by an electronics command 6, for example also housed in the base 4. As the weight of each copy of the publication in said pile 3 is known, it is possible to calculate the number of copies in the pile 3 simply by dividing the weight of the pile 3, detected by the load cells 5, by the weight of each copy. In Figure 3 there is illustrated a version of the distributing device in which instead of the load cells 5, inside the container 2 there is an infrared rays device 7 located on a reference surface 8, for example on the internal surface of the cover of the container 2. The infrared rays device 7 measures the distance between the top of the pile 3 and the reference surface 8. Also the infrared rays device 7 is commanded by the electronics command 6, to detect at intervals of time that are preset and settable remotely the distance between the top of the pile 3 and the reference surface 8. On the basis of said distance detected by the infrared-ray device 7 it is possible to calculate the height of the pile 3. As the height of the pile 3 is known, it is possible to calculate the number of copies therein at the moment of the detection by knowing the thickness of the copies in the pile 3. In Figure 4 there is illustrated a further version of the distributing device 1, in which, inside the container .1 a height sensor 9 is provided, for example a series of photocells. The height sensor 9 enables the height of the pile 3 to be measured, from which it is possible to obtain the number of copies in the pile 3, by knowing the thickness of the copies contained therein.
The container 2, in all the embodiments disclosed above with reference to Figures 1, 3 and 4, is provided with storage means, integrated into the electronics command 6, or operationally associated therewith, in which the results of the measurements are stored that were taken by the load cells 5, the infrared rays device 7, or the photocells 9. The command electronics 6 is further associated with transmission means (not shown) , suitable for transmitting the data stored in the storage means to further storage means 10 positioned remotely with respect to the distributing device 1.
Data transmission can occur via a cable or optic-fibre data transmission network 11, connecting the infrared rays device 1 to said network, or by a wireless data transmission network, for example a mobile telephony network with GPRS or UMTS technology.
In the case of data transmission via a wireless data transmission network, data can be transmitted directly to the remote storage means 10, or can be transmitted by a portable receiving/transmitting device 12, for example a Bluetooth or Zigbee device, carried by an operator 13. When the operator 13 moves near a distributor 1, the portable infrared rays device 12 automatically interrogates the storage means of the device 1 and downloads the data contained therein to then transmit the data to the remote storage means 10 by a GRPS or UMTS network.
The further storage means 10 can be part of a data- processing system by means of which the data transmitted to the further storage means 10 can be analysed by a plurality of devices 1, to process statistics, for example on the trend of the distribution of the publications in given geographical areas and over given periods of time, for example in the course of a day, of a week, etc. In an advantageous embodiment of the present invention, the transmission means of the distributing device 1 is suitable for dialoguing with a communication device 14 possessed by a user 15, such as, for example, a mobile phone provided with the same short-range communication technology as the distributor 1, such as Bluetooth or Zigbee.
The dialogue with the infrared rays communication device 14 may occur in two different modes.
According to a first mode, the infrared rays communication device 14 of the user 15 interrogates the transmission means of the device 1 for receiving information contained in the storage means, such as, for example, electronic copies of the printed publication, multimedia contents, advertising messages, proposals to take part in games or lotteries, etc. According to another communication mode the transmission means of the device 1 establishes a contact with the infrared rays communication device 14 of the user 15 to invite the user 15 to establish communication with the device 1 for the objects disclosed above. If the user accepts the invitation, everything occurs as disclosed above .
In the practical embodiment, the materials, the dimensions and the constructional details may be different from those indicated but be technically equivalent thereto, without falling outside the protective scope of the present invention.
