Abstract

Present invention is adjustable tile spacing device provided for setting tiles in consistent pattern with perfect spacing relative to one another so as to obtain grout joints of uniform width. Present invention of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for installation of each subsequent row of tiles or other installing materials where each subsequent row of installing material having offset vertical axial lines or having straight vertical axial lines during installation along horizontal, diagonal, and vertical lines. Universal spacer for tile installation consists of three major parts, which are made out of different colored, translucent and opaque hard plastic materials not susceptible to deformation.

INVENTION TITLE
UNIVERSAL SPACER FOR TILE INSTALLATION
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
1. The present invention relates, generally, to devices that facilitate laying of tile, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor and walls. More particularly, it pertains to an adjustable tile spacing device for preparing a recipient surface of uniform grout or other solutions for laying of tiles and properly positioning the tiles on the recipient surface. Examples of tile materials may include, but not limited to: ceramic tile, tile, clay tile, slate, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor, walls, and ceiling.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
2. The invention relates to a to an adjustable tile spacing device for preparing a recipient surface of uniform grout or other solutions for laying of tiles and properly positioning the tiles on the recipient surface.
3. Originally considered primarily a decorative art form, tile made of ceramic, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone has become a floor, wall and ceiling covering of choice for residential office, commercial and even industrial installations. Increased popularity has created a growing need for ways of lowering the cost, minimizing the efforts, and speeding the process of laying tile.
4. Typically, tile is set by applying a coat of cement or mastic to an underlying surface and placing the individual tile pieces side-by-side in contact with the cement or mastic material. Most commonly, adjacent tiles are spaced apart to define a more or less continuous army of joint spaces. When the cement or mastic cures the channels are filled with grout to form attractive, sealed joints. The joints contribute to the overall ornamental appearance, prevent chipping of the tile edges, and serve to relieve forces that might otherwise cause the tiles or grout to crack. For aesthetic effect and structural integrity, it is important that the joints be straight and of uniform width.

Anyone who has ever installed tile products before understands the aggravation associated with cutting and adjusting decorative tile, maintaining uniform grout lines and joints and conforming to a desired decorative pattern. A part of this pattern is the spacing between each piece that allows for placement of grout.
6. The spacers are well known in the tile setting trade. Over time, they have taken a variety of forms. Some of such forms are three or four-sided spacers made out of soft material like plastic. These known spacers have multiple disadvantages during installation process. Some of them are so small that it makes too difficult to installing and holding them in hand. Another problem arises after installation when spacer must be removed from the installing surface and it is covered with the glue. Moreover, when tile is heavy then its shape might become strained while installation and spacing between tiles would not agree with the size of the tile. Further, the process of installation big and heavy tiles on the wall is very difficult because heavy tiles are sliding down the wall. Existing spacers made out of plastic are ill- suited for installation of natural materials, which have canted corners. Similarly, existing spacers made out of plastic are ill-suited for installation decorative tiles composed out of small stones or plates. Further, existing spacers made out of plastic are difficult while installation of ceramic tiles or other tile materials upon heavy layers of glue or where spaces between tiles are not vertical or horizontal but offset, a skew, or diagonally.
7. Accordingly, a need has developed for a device that overcomes the problems associated with establishing consistent spacing when setting tiles on the floor, wall, or ceiling. The development of the adjustable tile spacing device fulfills this need and provides a device that accommodates placement of a plurality of decorative tiles made out of ceramic, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone, while maintaining uniform grout lines.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Therefore, it is an objective of the present invention to provide an adjustable tile spacing device for setting tiles in consistent pattern with perfect spacing relative to one another so as to obtain grout joints of uniform width. Device that overcomes the problems associated with establishing consistent spacing when setting tiles on the floor, wall, or ceiling. The development of the adjustable tile spacing device fulfills this need and provides a device that accommodates placement of a plurality of decorative tiles made out of ceramic, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone, while maintaining uniform grout lines.
9. The objective underlying the present invention is to provide an adjustable tile spacing devices which aid in setting decorative floor, wall and ceiling tile and provides for perfect spacing between tiles.
10. Another objective underlying the present invention is to provide a laying aid which is also a help to the non-professional and those who lay inventive floor elements only once and is, nevertheless, inexpensive.
11. It is another objective underlying the present invention is to provide a laying aid which can be used with most types of the tile materials. Also to provide a laying device that is capable to be used multiple times allowing departing with the device before glue is dried up. Laying device which made out of transparent bright colors that can be easily seen from a distance, at the same time allows seeing all corners of the tile which alleviate tile installation process. Device which allows easily removing glue, or installation spacing device itself from the installed surface between the tiles. Device which would not deform while alteration of the temperature or installation of the heavy materials like large-sized tiles made out of granite or marble.
12. It is another objective underlying the present invention is to provide a laying aid which can be used with most types of the tile materials where spaces between tiles are not vertical or horizontal but offset, a skew, or diagonal.
13. It is another objective underlying the present invention is to provide a laying device which can be used with a small tiles or decorative tiles. Moreover, device which will allow to install heavy tiles in such a way that its shape will not become strained while installation and spacing between tiles would agree with the size of the tile. It is another objective underlying the present invention is to provide a laying device which can be used for installation of natural materials, which have canted corners.
14. The use of the present invention allows decorative or regular tiles on floors, walls, or ceiling to be set with grater ease and consistency and in a manner which is quick and effective. DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFFERED EMBODIMENT AND THE BEST MODE

The present invention relates, generally, to devices that facilitate laying of tile materials include, but not limited to: ceramic tile, tile, clay tile, slate, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor, walls, and ceiling. More particularly, it pertains to an adjustable tile spacing device for preparing a recipient surface of uniform grout or other solutions for laying of tiles, properly positioning the tiles on the recipient surface, and providing for setting tiles in consistent pattern with perfect spacing relative to one another so as to obtain grout joints of uniform width. Examples of tile materials may include, but not limited to: ceramic tile, tile, clay tile, slate, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor, walls, and ceiling.

According to the preferred embodiment of the present invention, an adjustable tile spacing device is provided for setting tiles in consistent pattern with perfect spacing relative to one another so as to obtain grout joints of uniform width. According to the preferred embodiment of the present invention, an adjustable tile spacing device is provided a laying aid which can be used with most types of the tile materials where spaces between tiles are not vertical or horizontal but offset, a skew, or diagonally.

FIGS. 1 through 8 illustrate a preferred embodiment of universal spacer for tile installation of tile materials which may include, but not limited to: ceramic tile, tile, clay tile, slate, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor, walls, and ceiling.

Said recession 10 having depth 3A", width 3/8", and thickness 1/16"; 1/8"; 3/16"; 1A"; 5/16"; 3/8". Thickness depends upon spacing 1, FIG. 1 and 4-8, which we setting between ceramic tile, tile, clay tile, slate, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor, walls, and ceiling and for which we preparing a recipient surface of uniform grout or other solutions for laying of tiles, properly positioning the tiles on the recipient surface, and providing for setting tiles in consistent pattern with perfect spacing relative to one another so as to obtain grout joints of uniform width.

This second part 2, FIG. 2 and 5-8 of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for installation it at the center of the first part 1, between tiles or other installing material 2, FIG. 5-8 having offset vertical axial lines or straight vertical axial lines during installation along horizontal 1, FIG. 5 and 8, diagonal 6, FIG. 8, and vertical lines 8, FIG. 8. This second part 2, FIG. 2 and 5-8 of universal spacer for installation allow tile installation of intricate or decorative design.
23. 3). Third part 11, FIG. 3 and 4 of universal spacer for tile installation is made out of a narrow strip of translucent plastic material, having length 3", width 1" and thickness V", having rectangular-shaped groove having depth 9/16" and width 3/8". This third part 11, FIG. 3 and 4 of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for assessment of the correct position of one tile plate toward another tile plate.
24. This third part 11 is installed by inserting fist part 1 into the groove 12 of the part 11 (see FIG. 3 and 4). This grove 12 is located in the middle of the part 11. This part 11 controlling whether or not tiles or other installing materials placed on the same axial and whether tile edges are protruding or not. Such control allows timely eliminate those problems.
25. During installation of each row it is necessary to check the level, that the tile or any other installing material is installed horizontal toward the floor lines and vertical toward the wall line.
METHOD OF UTILIZATION OF THE UNIVERSAL SPACER FOR TILE INSTALLATION
26. 1). Prior to tile installation installer should check the floor, wall, or any surface where tile material will be installed for any humps, inequality, or bumps. In the case where tile need to be installed on the wall, installer should check whether wall is strictly vertical or it has inclination toward the floor and whether line between floor and wall and wall and ceiling is strictly horizontal. Where humps, inequality or bumps are found a mark must to be made and then such irregularity must be fixed using the glue or other material.
27. 2). Then installer should make a plan including designs, sizes of the tile and spaces between the tiles. According to that plan installer must make an estimate what space is necessary to leave from the ceiling so by the end of the installation whole uncut tile plate was installed under the ceiling line.
28. 3). Then installer making a markings on the wall, using a standard device level, where to install first bottom tile plate or whether first bottom plate need to be cut off in order to have full uncut tile plate to receive on the top of the wall under the ceiling line. A setting of the bottom tile on the installing surface must be cut off or uncut depending upon prior estimation of the height of the wall and spaces between the tiles.
29. 4). Using the markings (see (3)) installer screw in or using finishing nail attaching wooden plank 13, FIG. 4-5 and 7-8. Wooden plank having size approximately VA" X 1.5". Then on the top of the wooden plank installing first row of the tile according to previously formed arrangement. Plank might be removed after first row of the tile is fully installed and glue became consolidated.
30. 5). Then installer putting layer of the glue 4, FIG. 4 and 6-7, on the drywall, concrete, or other materials 5, FIG. 4-5 and 7. Then begin the row with installation of the whole uncut tile plate and ending the row with the tile which need to be cut off. Last tile in the row need to be cut off because row of tile ending on the line between two adjoined walls or where wall adjoined to the door or window. Very important that tile installation occurred along entire perimeter of the wall, row after the row. It must be done in order to avoid offset or displacement of the tile and inequality of the spaces between tiles. After installation of the first tile installer must check using standard device level whether tile installed tile is parallel to the wall and vertical toward ceiling and the floor.
31. 6). After installation of the first row starting to use First part 1 , FIG. 2 and 5-8 of universal spacer for tile installation. Thickness of the universal spacer for tile installation depends upon required spaces between the tiles. Then placing universal spacer for tile installation on the top of tile along its perimeter 14, FIG. 4-8 and in the case universal spacer for tile installation is not holding on the tile surface installer coating with the thin layer of glue in couple of places on tile surface and then gluing the universal spacer for tile installation to the tile. Whether universal spacer for tile installation is a little longer then necessary, then installer should cut off the rest. Whether universal spacer for tile installation is shorter then necessary installer should add lacking piece from another piece of the universal spacer for tile installation.
32. 7). After installation of the First part 1 , FIG. 2 and 5-8 of universal spacer for tile installation next row of tile should be installed. In the case where vertical spaces are necessary for the installation of tile installer should use Second part 2, FIG. 2 and 5-8 of universal spacer for tile installation. This second part 2, FIG. 2 and 5-8 of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for installation it in the center of the first part 1, between tiles or other installing material 2, FIG. 5-8 having offset or straight vertical axial lines during installation of horizontal 1, FIG. 5 and 8, diagonally 6, FIG. 8, and vertical 8, FIG. 8. This second part 2, FIG. 2 and 5-8 of universal spacer for installation allow tile installation of intricate or decorative design. 33. 8). After installation of the tile installer should employ Third part 11, FIG. 3 and 4 of universal spacer for tile installation. This third part 11 is installed by inserting fist part 1 into the groove 12 of the part 11 (see FIG. 3 and 4). This grove 12 is located in the middle of the part 11. This part 11 controlling whether or not tiles is other installing materials placed on the same axial and whether tile edges are protruding or not. Such control allows timely eliminate those problems.
34. 9). After installation of the following row of the tile or other installing material installer should follow the instructions according paragraphs 6, 7, and 8 above until the end of the wall.
35. 10). After glue becomes consolidated, approximately 8-12 hours, installer should remove universal spacer for tile installation using pliers with dull edges in order to preserve tile and universal spacer for tile installation. In the case where removal of universal spacer for tile installation is difficult it is recommended to water the wall and then take out universal spacer for tile installation.
36. 11). After universal spacer for tile installation is removed from the wall, wall should be cleared from glue. Then all openings in the wall should be covered with the grout. After grout becomes consolidated walls should be cleaned and smoothed.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES
37. FIGURE 1 depicts embodiment of the first part 1 of the Universal Spacer for Tile
Installation which is made out of a narrow strip of translucent plastic material, having length 2.5 fit, width %" and thickness 1/16"; 1/8"; 3/16"; %"; 5/16"; 3/8". Thickness depends upon spacing 1, FIG. 1 and 4-8, which we setting between ceramic tile, tile, clay tile, slate, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor, walls, and ceiling. A recipient surface must be prepared of uniform grout or other solutions for laying tiles, properly positioning it on the recipient surface. Tiles must be set in consistent pattern with perfect spacing relative to one another so as to obtain grout joints of uniform width. 1 - thickness and spacing between installing materials. 7 - a flat side of the Universal Spacer for Tile Installation, which is employed during installation of the following row of the tile.
38. FIGURE 2 depicts embodiment of the second part 2 of the Universal Spacer for Tile Installation which is made out of opaque plastic material, having size 11/8" x 11/8". Shape of second part 2 reminds the shape of the horseshoe. This second part 2 having two round edges 9, FIG. 2 protruding forward and having length 3A", width 3A". This second part 2 having recession 10, FIG. 2. This recession 10 having depth 3A", width 3/8", and thickness 1/16"; 1/8"; 3/16"; 1A"; 5/16"; 3/8".Thickness depends upon spacing 1, FIG. 1 and 4-8, which we setting between ceramic tile, tile, clay tile, slate, granite, marble, natural or synthetic stone material and other materials utilized for finishing and trimming the floor, walls, and ceiling. This recession 10 is used for assembling of the first part 1 and second part 2 of the Universal Spacer for Tile Installation.

FIGURE 3 depicts embodiment of the third part 11 of the Universal Spacer for Tile Installation which is made out of a narrow strip of translucent plastic material, having length 3", width 1" and thickness 1A", having rectangular-shaped groove having depth 9/16" and width 3/8". This third part 11 of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for testing installing tile or other tile material during installation of each subsequent row of tiles and other installing materials having offset or straight vertical axial lines during installation of horizontal 1, FIG. 5 and 8, diagonally 6, FIG. 8, and vertical 8, FIG. 8. This third part 11 is installed by inserting fist part 1 into the groove 12 of the part 11. Grove 12 is located in the middle of the part 11. Part 11 controlling whether or not tiles or other installing materials placed on the same axial and whether tile edges are protruding or not. Such control allows timely eliminate those problems.
40. FIGURE 4 depicts embodiment of utilization process the third part 11 of the Universal Spacer for Tile Installation. 5 - a wall on which we installing tile material 3 using glue 4e. Tile material 3 is installed in two rows along the entire height of the wall. First horizontal row of the tile by its bottom edge based on the wooden plank 13. Wooden plank 13 is previously attached to the wall by the level device screwing or nailing it to the wall. First part 1 of universal spacer for tile installation is installed between two rows of previously installed tile, on the top edge of the installed tile 14. On the top of the flat side 7 of the Universal Spacer for Tile Installation installed the following horizontal row of tile. Figure 4 depicts manner in which to install the third part 11 of the Universal Spacer for Tile Installation that employed for testing installing tile or other tile material during installation of each subsequent row of tiles and other installing materials. This third part 11 is assembled by inserting fist part 1 into the groove 12 of the part 11. This grove 12 is located in the middle of the part 11. This part 11 controlling whether or not tiles or other installing materials placed on the same axial and whether tile edges are protruding or not. If universal spacer for tile installation is touching the entire length of the first and second rows of the tile, then tile is installed correctly.
41. FIGURE 5 depicts collective view of the plan for installation of the tile or other material with vertical and horizontal lines. Figure 5 further depicts tile 3 installed to the wall in eight rows. First horizontal row of tile based upon previously attached to the wall wooden plank or brick 13. Each following row of tile is installed on the top of first part 1 of the universal spacer for tile installation that in its turn based upon top edge of the tile 14. Between each row of tile installed second part 2 of the universal spacer for tile installation, which holds an equal spacing vertically.

FIGURE 6 depicts collective view on the tile installation plan B, where: 1 - first part 1 of universal spacer for tile installation; 2 - second part 2 of the universal spacer for tile installation; 3 - vertically installed tile; 4e - glue; 5 - the wall on which tile is intended to be installed; 7 - flat side of first part 1 of the universal spacer for tile installation; 14 - a top edge of the installing tile.
43. FIGURE 7 depicts view on vertical cross-section A-A Fig. 5, between the tiles installed vertically on the wall in eight rows. Where: 1 - first part 1 of universal spacer for tile installation; 2 - second part 2 of the universal spacer for tile installation; 3 - vertically installed tile; 4e - glue; 5 - the wall on which tile is intended to be installed; 7 - flat side of first part 1 of the universal spacer for tile installation; 13 - wooden plank or brick previously attached to the wall according to the standard device - level; 14 - a top edge of the installing tile. 4. FIGURE 8 depicts collective view of the plan for installation of the tile or other material on the wall in eight rows to the top with offset lines and design. This tile is installed at 45° degree angle toward the floor line. Where: 1 - first part 1 of universal spacer for tile installation installed horizontally; 2 - second part 2 of the universal spacer for tile installation installed at 45° degree angle toward the floor line; 3 - vertically installed tile at 45°degree angle; 6 - first part 1 of the universal spacer for tile installation installed at 45°degree angle; 8 - first part 1 of universal spacer for tile installation installed vertically; 13 - wooden plank or brick previously attached to the wall according to the standard device - level; 14 - a top edge of the installing tile.

Claims

46. What is claimed is:
47. CLAIM 1. A universal spacer for tile installation, comprising:
48. First part of universal spacer for tile installation is made of a narrow strip of translucent plastic material, which is set between installing material;
49. said first part of universal spacer for tile installation having variable thickness depending upon the design of the spaces between installing material;
50. said first part of universal spacer for tile installation having variable length depending on the length of the raws of installing material;
51. wherein said first part of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for installation on its flat surface each subsequent row of tiles or other installing materials where each subsequent row of installing material having offset vertical axial lines or having straight vertical axial lines during installation along horizontal, diagonal, and vertical lines;
52. second part of universal spacer for tile installation is made out of opaque plastic material;
53. wherein said second part of universal spacer for tile installation having shape resembling a horseshoe;
54. said second part having two arms at the opposite ends protruding forward and having rounded curved edges;
55. said second part having recession in the middle of it;
56. said second part of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for installation at the center of the first part, between tiles or other installing material where each row of installing material having offset vertical axial lines or straight vertical axial lines during installation along horizontal, diagonal, and vertical lines;
57. third part of universal spacer for tile installation is made out of a narrow strip of translucent plastic material;

58. said third part of universal spacer for tile installation having rectangular-shaped groove;
59. said third part of universal spacer for tile installation is employed for assessment of the correct position of one tile plate toward another tile plate;
60. wherein said third part of universal spacer for tile installation is installed by inserting fist part of universal spacer for tile installation into the groove of the third part of universal spacer of tile installation. Said grove is located in the middle of said third part.
