STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19
Entry of this Statement prior to publication is respectfully requested.
Claim 1 is amended to clarify that it is detecting a poor ground connection by evaluating noise against a threshold. This is also found in the other independent claims. The present application and Reference D2 are using the common mode circuit to detect two different conditions or failure modes of the flow meter. Reference D2 is detecting when the electrode compartment is leaking and the process fluid is creating a ground path from one of the electrodes to the ground. It detects this condition by measuring the common mode electrode voltage that is synchronous with the coil driver. The present application, on the other hand, is detecting when the ground path between the transmitter and the flow tube is insufficient. If a good ground path does not exist, the electrodes become antennas and pick up noise from the environment. Therefore, Reference D2 does not disclose a diagnostic circuit that is adapted to detect a poor ground condition when line noise exceeds a noise threshold.
The circuit in Reference Dl (the Herwig reference) is attempting to see whether one of the electrodes has become electrically isolated from the fluid. For instance, deposits from the process fluid can electrically isolate an electrode from the fluid being sensed. Therefore, Reference Dl has nothing to do with detecting a poor process ground connection. Similarly, Reference D3 (the Keech Reference) is also looking to see whether the electrode has developed an open circuit or whether it has become isolated from the fluid in the tube. The circuit is monitoring the electrodes to see whether they develop an open circuit or whether the pipe is empty (that is, whether the electrode has come out of contact with fluid in the pipe). Again, this has nothing to do with detecting a poor process ground connection.
