Abstract

The disclosure relates to vacuum-operated safety syringes designed to prevent accidental needle prick, wherein the needle of the syringe is retracted after use into a vacuum created within the hollow plunger and/or the syringe barrel of the syringe. An exceedingly simple design with minimal moving parts is provided. Negative pressure is created within a hollow plunger and/or the interior of the barrel during the act of injection as the plunger is depressed. Upon complete depression of the plunger, the retractable needle assembly is drawn into the barrel by the vacuum created in the interior. One or more one-way valves allow and maintain the vacuum that is created during the act of injection. The plunger of the inventive safety syringe can also be manufactured to be preconditioned at negative pressure.
