Abstract

The invention "Device and method for electronic document viewing" relates to the devices and methods for viewing of electronic documents. The invention enables the user to dynamically determine which parts of the electronic document he/she is viewing or processing constitute active content. Only active content is shown on the screen. In addition, functions such as printing, selection, search and navigation within the document operate only on the active part of the electronic document and not on the whole electronic document. The invention can be installed into devices and programs for electronic document viewing, as well as into devices and programs for electronic document processing. The invention can be also realized with existing electronic documents such as: Microsoft Word documents, Adobe PDF documents, Kindle books, etc. in a standard format or in a modified format. When it is not possible or economical to modify the existing format of electronic document inscription, it is possible to realize this invention with the standard format, but with a slightly lower functionality and flexibility.

Description

DEVICE AND METHOD FOR ELECTRONIC DOCUMENT VIEWING
DESCRIPTION Technical field
The invention "device and method for electronic document viewing" relates to the devices and the methods for electronic document viewing.
This invention provides additional functionalities to devices for electronic document viewing, and devices for electronic document processing by its installation. In addition, this invention provides programs for electronic documents viewing, and electronic document processing programs with additional functionality by means of installation of the described method into the program code which is carried out on the computer with the user's screen for display of the electronic document and the computer media reader, where the electronic document is entered. Background Art
BACKGROUND ART DESCRIPTION
Existing devices and methods for document viewing facilitate viewing of electronic documents on displays and navigation through electronic documents just like with paper documents and books, but they also facilitate some other methods, which are not available with paper documents and books. The existing methods of navigation through electronic documents include: scrolling, graphical zooming, graphical speed-dependent automatic zooming, page thumbnails, bookmarks, hyperlinks, headings, go-to and similar. Graphical zooming of electronic documents includes zoom-in and zoom-out functionality. Graphical zoom-in shows more detail. Graphical zoom-out shows less detail and a larger area of an electronic document. In the case when it concerns textual electronic documents, graphical zooming is usually achieved by changing of the font size.
TECHNICAL PROBLEM
Existing devices and methods of electronic document viewing do not facilitate zooming of the content or selection of parts of the electronic document content based on the criterion of importance of parts of the electronic document. Apart from this, they do not facilitate the viewing of only the parts of an electronic document selected by its importance. Furthermore, they do not enable navigation, printing, selection, search and other functions through the electronic document on only the parts of the electronic document selected by their importance.
SOLUTION SOUGHT It is necessary to facilitate that the devices and methods for electronic document viewing, by using information about the importance or classification of each particular part of the electronic document, enable the user to select all or only specific parts of the electronic document.
The selected parts of the electronic document are "active content" of the electronic document at that point. Only "active content" of the electronic document is shown on the user's screen, and not the whole electronic document content.
Besides, if installed, the printing, selection, search and navigation functions within the document act only upon the "active content" of the electronic content and not on the whole electronic document. "Active content" is a subset of the whole content. In that way, the user is enabled to work on a shorter document, thus increasing the efficiency and speed of some operations, such as search. What is more, the user is able to print a shorter version of the document, containing only the content which is important to him at that point.
It is necessary to find a solution which will function with documents whose format is adjusted to this requirement, but also a solution for documents whose format is not specially adjusted, i.e. whose format has not been changed.
Disclosure of Invention
The subjects of the invention "device and method for electronic document viewing" are device and the method for viewing electronic documents, marked in such a way as to have a working mode "active view". In the working mode "active view", electronic document "active content" is used, which is dynamically formed as a subset of the whole electronic document.
The user can switch on or off the "active view" working mode, or it can be arranged for "active view" to be permanently switched on.
Hereinafter the functioning of the device is described, as well as the method if the working mode "active view" is switched on. "Active content" is formed at each specific moment on the basis of the belonging of each particular part of the electronic document to a chosen level of importance and based on the user's selection as to which importance levels are active in the electronic document at that moment.
The belonging of each part of the document to a particular "importance level" is determined by means of loading of the "importance level" from the document if the level is inscribed in the electronic document, or it is determined on the basis of the existing document formatting, where the "importance level" does not exist in the electronic document.
Each of the importance levels can be either active or inactive, depending on the user's selection. Electronic document "active content" consists of electronic document parts which belong to active levels at that moment. The invention can be installed in devices and programs for electronic document viewing, as well as in devices and programs for electronic document processing.
In devices and programs for electronic document viewing, the author, publisher and reader are most frequently three different users. Example: purchase of books in electronic format and reading on a device for book reading in electronic format.
In devices and programs for electronic document processing, the user most frequently has the role of both the author and the reader. Example: creating, editing and viewing of the document by means of programs for text processing.
Devices for electronic document viewing or processing show the electronic document on the user's device screen.
Programs for electronic document viewing or processing show the electronic document on the screen of the computer on which they are being used.
Importance levels in each particular document represent the user's selection. The importance of document parts can also be considered as classification of electronic document parts. Selection of active levels in an electronic document is made by the zooming of the content and selection of the content, for which it is essential that all parts of the electronic document also have information about to which particular importance level they belong.
The term of content zooming in this invention represents the zooming of electronic document content based on the importance of electronic document parts. It is not important here whether graphic zooming is also carried out. In describing and clarifying of this patent, it is supposed that graphic zooming is not carried out. Of course, in practical realization of the invention, it is also possible to combine graphic zooming with content zooming.
The importance of the electronic document parts is divided into hierarchically listed "importance levels", numerated starting with 1, level 1 being the highest possible level in the document. In order for the device or the method to function, it is essential for the levels to be in a hierarchical order, regardless of the fact of whether the hierarchy is important also for the user. For easier use, it is desirable to also give a descriptive, user-friendly name to each level. For example, level 3 can have a name "definitions of important notions". The user or the manufacturer can define the number of levels.
Information about the importance of a particular part of an electronic document is either additional information inscribed in the electronic document as "importance level", or the existing information about formatting of electronic document parts are used for determination of the "importance levels". Information about the importance of the content can be unchangeable or changeable by the user who views the electronic document.
If the information about the importance of a particular part of an electronic document is additional information inscribed into the electronic document, it means that, for already existing types of document, e.g. doc, docx, pdf or Kindle book format, the internal format of inscription of the electronic document must be modified by means of adding information concerning the importance of a part of the electronic document. The information must be at the level of the smallest information in the electronic document. In a textual electronic document, as a rule, it is a character. A device or program which uses the information about the importance inscribed in an electronic document has the possibility of reading that information and optionally also a possibility of inscription of that information. Apart from this, an electronic document which has built-in information about levels can have a possibility of allowing or disallowing changes and inscription of importance level data in order to allow or disallow a change to the importance levels inscribed in that electronic document. Besides, the device or program must ban changing of information about importance levels if it is disallowed for that document. What is more, it is also possible to, optionally, inscribe in the electronic document the names of importance which are used in that electronic document.
In order to enable the above described, the electronic document format needs to contain or electronic document standard format should be modified in such a way as to contain: data about importance "importance level" at the level of the smallest information in the document
optional data "importance level names" at the document level - optional data "allow importance level change" at the document level.
The electronic document standard format in this invention designates a document format which in its format does not have above the listed information.
The electronic document modified format in this invention designates a document format which in its format has the data "importance level" and, optionally, also "importance level names" and "allow importance level change".
Some of the existing devices and programs for viewing or processing of electronic documents in a standard format have information about electronic document formatting which can be used as information about importance upon realization of this invention. Should existing information about formatting be used, it is essential to facilitate joining of formatting with importance levels. This joining of formatting with importance levels is saved as parameters for device or program use. The parameters can be defined in advance by the manufacturer either in the device or in the program, or the user can freely define, enter and save. For example, it is possible to, in the device or in the program, define in advance that text marked with a yellow color has the importance of level 1, that text marked with a green color has the importance of level 2, and that all the remaining text has the importance of level 3. This joining of formatting and styles with the importance levels is saved as parameters for device or program use. The user or the manufacturer can define the number of importance levels, joining of formatting with importance levels and determine the default level for content for which there is no defined joining. By zooming and level selection, active importance levels are defined, thus also the "active content" of an electronic document.
The functions for zooming and for level selection influence the amount of the "active content" in the way that they activate or deactivate a specific importance level. When a particular importance level in an electronic document is active, electronic document parts which belong to that level constitute a part of the document "active content". For example, if an electronic document has levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the levels 1 and 2 are active, then only the parts of an electronic document which belong to the levels 1 and 2, constitute the "active content". The electronic document "active content" and not the whole content is shown on the display. Apart from this, the functions for printing, selection, search and navigation are adjusted in the way that they only act upon the "active content" of an electronic document.
Zooming of the content and selection of electronic document content is carried out with the afore-listed functions, installed in the program or device.
While zooming the content of an electronic document which contains information about the importance of document parts, the following functions are possible: "zoom-in", "zoom-out", "level-down" and "level-up".
In addition, for selection of electronic document contents according to the importance of the electronic document parts, functions for activation and deactivation of each particular level are needed: "activate-level" and "deactivate-level".
The function "zoom-in" increases the number of active importance levels, i.e. increases the quantity of the "active content". Apart from the importance levels which are already active, the function "zoom-in" activates also the highest inactive level, which is lower than the active ones. For example, if level 1 is the highest level and levels 1 and 2 are currently active, after the function "zoom-in", levels 1, 2 and 3 will be active.
The function "zoom-out" decreases the number of active importance levels, i.e. decreases the quantity of the "active content". Out of active importance levels, the function "zoom-out" deactivates the lowest level. For example, if level 1 is the highest level and currently levels 1, 2 and 3 are active, after the function "zoom-out", levels 1 and 2 will be active.
The function "level-down" leaves the same number of levels active, but deactivates the highest out of active importance levels and activates the highest inactive importance level which is lower out of the active ones. For example, if level 1 is the highest level and currently levels 2 and 3 are shown, after the function "level-down", levels 3 and 4 will be active. The function "level-up" leaves the same number of levels active, but deactivates the lowest out of active importance levels and activates the lowest inactive level, which is higher out of the active ones. For example, if level 1 is the highest level and currently levels 2 and 3 are active, after the function "level-up", levels 1 and 2 will be active.
For example, if a document has 4 levels, by using the functions "zoom-in" and "zoom-out", the "active content" is changed in the following manner:
Figure imgf000009_0001
For example, if a document has 4 levels and levels 1 and 2 are currently active, by using the functions "level-down" and "level-up", the "active content" is changed in the following manner:
Figure imgf000009_0002
The function "activate-level" works in such a way as to activate the selected level.
The function "deactivate-level" works in such a way as to deactivate the selected level. The functions "activate-level" and "deactivate-level" enable the user to activate and thus show only the desired selected importance levels within an electronic document. For example, it enables the user to, out of levels 1, 2, 3 and 4, to activate and show on display, for example, levels 1 and 4, or any other combination on the user's screen.
Apart from this, if additional information inscribed in an electronic document is used for information about importance, i.e. if a modified format is used, functions "show-importance" and "hide-importance" are also needed.
The function "show-importance", on the electronic document shows the importance of each particular part shown on the user's screen. Showing of the importance of a particular part is achieved by additional formatting of the parts of an electronic document. The function "hide-importance", on the electronic document hides the importance of each particular part shown on the user's screen, by not applying additional formatting.
In the event that, in implementation, the "importance" is called "classification", then the functions are "show-classification" and "hide-classification". As already explained, the
"importance" can equally be "classification" or something else, depending on the need. The term "importance" will continue to be used in further text, for the sake of simplicity.
It is not essential that device or a program has implemented all the functions listed: "zoom-in", "zoom-out", "level-down", "level-up", "show-importance", "hide-importance", "activate-level", "deactivate-level". Furthermore, a device or a program which uses information about importance, inscribed in an electronic document i.e. which uses a modified format, having implemented functions "show- importance" and "hide-importance", has a possibility to define the parameter of formatting for the visual illustration of each importance level. The method of formatting for the visual illustration can be defined in advance in device or a program by the manufacturer, or the user can define it. The user or the manufacturer can, for each particular level, define the method of formatting of a part of an electronic document which belongs to that level.

o level 1 - yellow
o level 2 - orange
o level 3 - red
o level 4 - purple
Note: the mentioned parameters are only an example of a possible implementation of this invention.
Device user has bought via internet a book. The book author had, in advance, installed in the book the levels of importance and level names in the following manner:
- level 1 - book title and all titles
level 2 - basic definition
level 3 - detailed description
level 4 - examples from practice
Note: Of course, this is only an example of a book and an example of the levels for the purposes of demonstration of operation of the invention. The quoted divisions according to importance can be different; this depends on the area the book deals with, it depends on the author and other parameters. Hereinafter, a more detailed appearance of the screen in the working mode "active view" has been described.
Figure 1 shows the appearance of the device user display 10, the area for showing of the electronic document 11, and the toolbar 12. At the bottom of the screen, under the document, the toolbarl2 for activation of the functions described in this patent is shown.
The icon "importance illustration" 13 serves to show the importance level of a part of the document by means of additional formatting on the display. By the icon 13, the functionalities "show-importance" and "hide-importance" are realized. By touching the icon 13 on the touch screen, the icon and the document view are changed. When the icon is active, the electronic document levels are shown on the display by means of additional text formatting. When the icon is inactive , the electronic document levels are not shown on the display.
The icons 14 "search magnifying glass" and "checkmark" 15 serve for selection of one of the two methods of active level selection. At any moment, only one of the icons 14 and 15 can be active. By pressing with finger on one of the icons 14 or 15, the touched icon becomes active and the other icon becomes inactive. When the icon 14 is active, the level selection is made by the zooming of the content, i.e. by the functions: "zoom-in" and "zoom-out", "level-down" and "level-up". The zooming functions are activated using the touch screen and two-finger movement. When the icon 15 is active on the toolbar, the selection of active levels is possible for each level separately, by which the functions "activate-level" and "deactivate-level" are realized. When the icon 14 is active, then the level activation and deactivation is made using the functions "zoom-in", "zoom-out", "level-down" and "level-up". The icons "level active" 16, 17, 18 and 19 show whether the level is active or not. Each icon represents one level: icon 16 "level 1 active", icon 17 "level 2 active", icon 18 "level 3 active", icon 19 "level 4 active". If a level is active, the corresponding icon is active. If a level is inactive, the corresponding icon is inactive. When the icon 15 is active, then the level activation and deactivation are made using the functions "activate-level" and "deactivate-level". In that case, by touching with a finger one of the icons 16, 17, 18 and 19, the corresponding level is activated, or deactivated. Equally, the icon changes its form. Each icon represents one level: icon 16 "level 1 active", icon 17 "level 2 active", icon 18 "level 3 active", icon 19 "level 4 active". If a level is active, the corresponding icon is active. If a level is inactive, the corresponding icon is inactive.
The color display facilitates that icons 16, 17, 18 and 19 are in color, of the same color as the text of a particular level. For example: level 1 - icon 16 - yellow color, etc. This makes work easier for the user.
EXAMPLE 2
Example 2 is an example of the installation of the invention into a portable device for viewing of electronic documents with a standard format.
The electronic document reader has the following characteristics:
- light, portable design
internal battery powered
monochrome touch screen
internal memory for books
possibility of book purchase from the internet by means of a wireless connection - text marking function enabled through touch screen.
Note: This is only an example of a possible application. The invention can be applied also to other applications of devices or programs for electronic document viewing or processing.
In this example, a standard electronic document format is used, i.e. electronic documents do not have an internal inscription format modified in a way which would facilitate inscription of information about the importance of a part of the electronic document.
When reading a book, the reader user has the possibility to mark book parts which are important to him using a text marking function.
The invention is realized by installation of the following functionalities into the reader:
the switching on and off of the working mode "active view" is facilitated through the device configuration functionalities "zoom-in" and "zoom-out" are facilitated by touch with two fingers across the touch screen in the way that the two fingers are either moving apart or coming together across the screen
the device allocates the importance level on the basis of formatting and the installed parameters of joining of formatting and levels
the device dynamically creates "active content" as a subset of the whole document, based on each particular part of an electronic document belonging to a specific importance level and on the basis of currently active "importance levels"
in the working mode "active view", the device shows only the electronic document "active content" on the user screen and not the whole document content
in the working mode "active view" the functionalities for search and navigation through the document use only the "active content" of the electronic document and not the whole document content.
The invention is realized by installation of the following parameters into the reader:
- the manufacturer installed the number of importance levels into the device:
o number of importance levels: 3
the manufacturer installed joining of formatting and levels into the device:
o all titles are level 1
o text highlighted in yellow is level 2
- the manufacturer installed the default importance level for document content into the device:
o all remaining text is level 3.
In this way, without the change in the format of the electronic document inscription and with a negligible change, a part of this invention's functionality is added to the existing reader. Additional functionality from which the reader benefits by installation of this invention is that, by two finger zooming when using the touch screen, he/she can choose:
display of the whole document, i.e. levels 1, 2 and 3, or
display of the title and the parts of the document which are only important to him/her, i.e. levels 1 and 2, or display of the title only, i.e. level 1. EXAMPLE 3
Example 3 is an example of the installation of the invention into the document processing program on the computer with standard format. Let us presume that a reader studies from a book in paper form. As the reader reads the book, he uses yellow highlighter to mark the most important definitions and concepts. Upon his/her second reading, for example, in order to revise and memorize the material, the reader pages the book, reading only the parts highlighted in yellow. Only in the event that he needs to check additional explanations and/or examples, the reader also reads the remaining text, next to the yellow highlighted text.
Let us now presume that the reader reads an electronic book and wishes to highlight in the same way book parts important to him/her and to use them when re-reading the book in the same way as with the book in paper form. In this simple example we presume that the book is available in the format for a popular text processing program, which enables the reader to add information about the importance of specific parts of the document text himself/herself. In a similar way as per the book in paper form, the reader highlights in yellow the most important definitions and concepts in the electronic book. Upon revision and memorizing of the material, similarly to the paper book, the reader wishes to read only the highlighted parts and, only if necessary, also the remaining text. The invention described in this document enables the reader to, in a considerably easier, faster and more efficient way have the insight into the highlighted text, i.e. the text which is important to him/her and to, much easier and more efficiently, navigate through the document in search for an important definition.
Let us presume that, for the user, the importance of the document parts is divided into four levels, as follows:
Level 1 - heading 1
Level 2 - heading 2 Level 3 - text highlighted yellow
Level 4 - all remaining text
The invention is realized by installment of the following functionalities into the program:
the user can switch on and off the working mode "active view"
the user can enter and save the parameter number of importance levels
the user or the manufacturer have the possibility to enter and save the parameters of joining of formatting with levels
the user can enter and save the parameter default level for the electronic document content, for which a defined joining of formatting with levels does not exist
the program determines to which "importance level" each electronic document part belongs on the basis of the existing formatting of that part of the document and on the basis of joining of formatting with levels. The document part for which the joining formatting-level exists, belongs to that joined level. The document part for which there is no joining formatting-level, belongs to the default level.
the functions "zoom-in", "zoom-out", "level-up", "level-down"
the functions "activate-level" and "deactivate-level"
the program dynamically creates "active content" as a subset of the whole document, based on each particular part of an electronic document belonging to a specific importance level and on currently active "importance levels"
in the working mode "active view", the program shows only the electronic document "active content" on the user screen and not the whole document content
in the working mode "active view" the functionalities for search and navigation through the document use only the "active content" of the electronic document and not the whole document content
a new item "active view" is installed into the menu, with the following sub-menus:
o switch on/switch off active view
o parameter inscription: number of levels, joining of formatting and
importance levels, default importance level
o zoom in - calls for "zoom-in
o zoom out - calls for "zoom-out1 o level up - calls for "level-up"
o level down - calls for "level-down"
o level activation, functions "activate-level" and "deactivate-level"
The user entered the following parameters:
- number of importance levels: 4
joining of formats and styles with importance levels:
o text marked as heading 1 is level 1 in the document
o text marked as heading 2 is level 2 in the document
o yellow highlighted text is level 3
- default importance level:
o all remaining text is level 4
Following this, the reader has read the book and highlighted yellow the text important to him/her.
Upon the revision and memorizing of the material, as is the goal, the reader wishes to read only the highlighted parts and, only if necessary, the remaining text. In order to realize this, the reader should do the following:
open the book with the program
switch on "active view" - at that point, all the levels are active, i.e. levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 activate "zoom-out - after this, levels 1, 2 and 3 are active, i.e. heading 1, heading 2 and yellow highlighted text
the reader goes over only the book parts which are important to him
if he/she needs more information, he/she activates "zoom-in" in order to access also the remaining text. Following the function "zoom-in", levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 are shown. The reader can read also the remaining information and not only the most important information. The whole document is contained in the document "active content".
When the function "zoom-in" is activated, shift in the current position of reading within the electronic document does not occur, which means that the cursor stays in the same position. This facilitates fast navigation through the document. This is a very considerable improvement in efficiency in the search and navigation functions. Hereinafter a method as to how to realize a fast and efficient search by installation of this invention into devices or programs is described, using this example for clarification.
After the user has highlighted important parts of the electronic document in the manner quoted in the example, the user felt the need to find an explanation and a definition for a specific term which he knows is contained somewhere in the electronic document. For example, the user is looking for the text "search method definition". In order to find it, the user opens the electronic document, activates levels 1, 2, and 3 with the "zoom-out" function, thus reducing the "active content" in relation to the whole content, finds the required definition using the function of computer or manual text search and reads it. In the event that he/she needs additional information, he/she uses the function "zoom-in", increases the "active content" and displays the rest of the text surrounding the definition.
Of course, if the reader is able to exactly define the search, the same could be achieved also with only the function for computer search in the whole document, but the function find would generate more results on the whole document, out of which the reader needs only one, the one which is important to him/her. In addition, if the reader is not able to exactly enter the term for search, the function find cannot be used and manual search on a much smaller amount of text is incomparably more efficient than the search on the whole electronic document.
A panel for active level selection is installed into the user interface in order to enable him/her a simple and well laid out level activation for selection of active levels. The panel contains a list of all levels and has the possibility to activate and deactivate each of the levels by means of a check box by the name of each level.
Industrial Applicability
It is possible to apply the described invention to devices or to programs for showing of electronic documents. It is also possible to apply the described invention to devices or programs for electronic document processing.
The quoted examples and the figure are only an example of possible applications. As can be seen from the previous examples, it is possible to realize the invention with or without the change in the internal format of electronic document inscription. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. When it is not possible or economical to modify the format of electronic document inscription, it is possible to realize this invention using a standard format, but with a slightly lower functionality and flexibility.
