Description

INFANT BOTTLE ATTACHMENT TO FACILITATE
FEEDING OF AN INFANT
A61J, A47D
The present invention relates to an infant bottle attachment to facilitate the feeding of an infant.
BACKGOUND
Feeding of infants is frequently done by means of an infant bottle. Even where the infant is generally breastfed, it is periodically necessary to bottle-feed the infant.
Infants are easily distracted during feeding, which results in prolonged feeds. Such prolonged feeds may also result in the infant growing tired and not completing its meal. This results in more frequent feeds being required and reduced duration of sleep. In order to overcome such distractions, the person facilitating the feeding needs to refocus the attention of the feeding infant. The refocusing often involves significant hand motions or holding up play devices, which often becomes tedious for the feeder. The availability of only one free hand further exacerbates the task of the feeder. Feeding time is also an opportunity to develop the somatosensations of the infant by modifying the environmental stimuli. It would thus be advantageous to have a device, which is integral with the bottle and facilitates the ease and quality of infant feeding.
The invention seeks to provide an infant bottle attachment that at least partially ameliorates the abovementioned disadvantages associated with the prior art.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION
The invention provides an infant bottle attachment comprising a bottle securing means and an extending member, which extends from the securing means to a position viewable by the infant, in use.
Preferably the extending member is movable relative to the bottle, thereby enabling a person feeding the infant to move the extending member and retain focus, alternately refocus a feeding infant towards the bottle.
Preferably the bottle securing means enables the securing of the attachment at various positions about the bottle.
Preferably the bottle securing means secures to the bottle by anyone of a snap-fit, clamp, or bottle-lid engaging means, wherein the bottle-lid is configured to be received between the bottle and the bottle-lid and secured therein when fastening the lid to the bottle.
Preferably the bottle attachment comprises at least one sensory development attachment for developing the sensory integration of the infant during feeding. Conveniently the bottle attachment comprises varying tactile components including at least one of a raised section or a plurality of tactile differing materials, which may be engaged by an infant holding the bottle. Conveniently the bottle attachment has releasably securable components to modify the type and extent of sensory modalities being developed thereby providing sensory integration which combines vestibular, proprioception and touch development in an age appropriate manner. Conveniently the attachment comprises colours and patterns for developing colour recognition, which may include the use of lighting apparatus.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided an infant bottle with an integral bottle attachment comprising an extending member, which extends from the bottle to a position viewable by the infant, in use.
Further features, variants and/or advantages of the invention will emerge from the following non-limiting description of an example of the invention made with reference to the accompanying drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 shows a perspective side view of infant bottle attachment of the invention;
Figure 2 shows a side view of the bottle attachment of Figure 1 secured on to a bottle;
Figure 3 shows a perspective side view of a second embodiment of the infant bottle attachment of the invention whilst secured on to a bottle; shows a perspective side view of a third embodiment of the infant bottle attachment of the invention whilst secured on to a bottle; and
shows a perspective side view of a Figure 4 without a bottle being secured therein.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Figures 1 and 2 show an infant bottle attachment 10 comprising a bottle securing means 12 and an extending member 14, which extends from the securing means to a position viewable by the infant, in use. The bottle securing means comprises a generally "C"-shaped base 16 and an opening 18 which is narrower than the diameter of the bottle 20. The base is resiliency deformable thereby enabling a bottle to be received through the opening 18. In use, the base deforms to receive the bottle and secures around a partial circumference of the bottle as best shown in Figure 2 and 3. Since the diameter of the bottle is greater than the opening - a deforming force is maintained against the base, which in turn exerts a counter-force to secure the bottle attachment to the bottle.
The extending member comprises an elongate, malleable tube 22 which extends from the base of the securing member. The tube position may be adjusted to optimise positioning relative to the feeding infant. The tube comprises a broadened free-end 24 upon which the infant focuses during feeding.
In another embodiment of the invention as best shown in Figure 3, the bottle attachment has a second sensory development attachment 26, loosely extending from the securing means. The sensory development attachment comprises tactile varying components including raised sections 28 with a plurality of different tactile textures. The sensory development attachment extends about the length of the bottle thereby ensuring the attachment is optimally placed for engagement by the infant.
Figures 4 and 5 show a further embodiment of the invention whereby the bottle securing means 12 of the infant bottle attachment 10 similarly comprises an extending member 14, which extends from the securing means to a position viewable by the infant, in use. The bottle securing means has a rounded base 16 which abuts the base of the infant bottle 20, in use. The securing means comprises three spaced fingers 26 which extend from the rounded base. The fingers are resiliently deformable and biased inwardly. In use, the infant bottle abuts the rounded base and is secured between the fingers, which fingers are outwardly deformed due to the bottle circumference. The force of the inward bias exerted by the fingers against the bottle, secures infant attachment to the bottle. As will be appreciated, the inward finger bias enables the attachment to be secured to bottles of variable diameter.
The extending member 14 comprises an elongate, malleable tube 22 which extends from the base of the securing member. The tube position may be adjusted to optimise positioning relative to the feeding infant. The tube comprises a triangular attachment 24 at its free-end upon which the infant focuses during feeding. In addition, a set of three support arms 28 extend outwardly from the rounded base. An outer ring 30 is secured to the support arms. The outer ring has a plurality of discs 32 around its circumference. The discs each have a central aperture through which the outer ring securably passes to maintain the discs in position.
The bottle attachment comprises colours and patterns to develop colour recognition. This facilitates the sensory integration development of the infant. Sensory Integration is the process by which sensory information from our environment is taken into and processed by the brain. The way the information is processed determines ones reactions and behaviours. There are various sensory modalities, namely smell, taste, sight, sound and somatosensations. Somatosensations are the sensations from our body and include the sense of movement (vestibular), proprioception, touch and interoception. Many of these senses begin developing in utero and continue to develop at birth and during infancy. The bottle attachment thereby facilitates a positive emotional climate through touch and visual stimulation of the infant during feeding. Accordingly, the integration of the attachment with the bottle provides the infant with a more holistic sensory integration experience during feeding by combining vestibular, proprioception and touch.
It will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to the abovementioned embodiments. For example it will be appreciated that the attachment is preferably age appropriate. Accordingly, the attachment used for the beginning few months of an infant's life will comprise components which focus on the early development of the sensory modalities. By example attachments encouraging early colour recognition, and early sound development may be used. Once the infant is older and its senses are more established, the attachment may be changed for advanced sensory development for example the attachment will emit a louder sound and the colours and patterns used will be more advanced. Use of lighting apparatus about the attachment with programmable sequences is also envisaged. The claims and the summary of invention form an integral aspect of the description of the invention.
