Description

IMAGE DISPLAY DEVICE WITH PROGRAM-BASED AUTOMATIC CHANNEL SWITCHING FUNCTION
The present invention relates to an image display device having an automatic program type categorization feature such that the users are automatically offered an alternative program in a given genre.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that conventional program selection methods fail in reaching the right program content in a time-saving manner. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, channel surfing might almost take one hour before every single channel is viewed at least once. An electronic program guide although proving in this respect more efficient, still involves the evident disadvantage of processing time efficiency for a user to examine all the electronic program guide pages.
Accordingly, individual view preferences of users can be better processed and a more relevant program content can be offered to the user without losing the processing time spent in hunting a desirable program.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as EP2424268, which defines an RF remote control paired with a first device that is paired with a second device via HDMI-CEC upon a user operation. The pairing method uses a system including a television receiver as the first device having a display unit, a moving-image playback device as a second device connected to the first device via HDMI-CEC, and a radio frequency remote control having been paired with the first device.
The present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that users are automatically offered an alternative program in a given genre. The present invention therefore solves the technical problem of accelerating processing of the significant amount of information for a user, by which an automatically generated program list is offerable.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to automatically switch to a predefined TV program upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which an image display device automatically switches to a predefined TV program upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions.
The present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, having an electronic memory and an automatic channel switch function button. Said method have the steps of, receiving categorical information of different programs in different channels, storing a database of categorical information of different programs in different channels, including total watching duration of each program in a given category for each channel, determining the category of a given program being watched on a given channel upon pressing of said automatic channel switch function button, determining channels that were previously watched in the actual category that is being watched, determining the channel with the highest priority by comparing total watching duration data of all the channels in the actual program category up to that time and automatically switching to another channel that has the highest priority in the actual program category.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in the claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of automatic switching to an alternative TV program.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes different tasks associated with the automatic channel switch function button according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device enabling a user to reach a TV program according to her/his personal preferences without having to process a significant amount of channel and program type information. It is known that digital broadcasting services generally provide information in regards to the genre of the programs being watched. The genre information may typically define a certain number of categories characterizing the content of a program. A content identifier therefore describes the contextual category of the digital program so as to let the users obtain information as to the classification of an event or a program.
Alternatively, it is also possible that a user herself/himself arranges a predefined list comprising a plurality of programs assigned to various program genres. In both cases, the image display device may have a database of various programs categorized in the form of a plurality of program genres indicative of the contextual character of the given program and associated with a given channel.
To this end, the image display device of the present invention is fitted with an internal memory so as to store the channel-specific program-pertinent information such that TV programs that were being previously watched in the actual program category up to that time are determined. In this way, an automatic channel switch function associated with a respective TV panel or remote control button is performed such that the image display device automatically tunes to another channel that has the highest priority in the actual program category.
An alternative channel having the highest priority is determined by comparing total watching duration data of all the TV channels as these were broadcasting in the category of the program being currently watched. For instance, when a given user watches a movie in Channel A and presses the automatic channel switch button, all the channels’ viewing statistics are compared and the channel having the longest watching duration in the movie category, for instance Channel B, is selected. In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, said image display device comprising an internal memory and an automatic channel switch function button, said method for operating the image display device comprising the steps of: a) receiving at least one category characterizing the content of a program in the form of a content identifier describing the contextual category of an event or a program, b) storing on the internal memory a database of categories in respect of a plurality of programs associated with a given channel in the form of channel-specific program-pertinent information, including total watching duration data of all channels in different categories, c) determining category of a given program being watched on a given channel upon activation of the automatic channel switch function button, d) determining channels that were previously watched in the actual category that is being watched, e) determining the channel with the highest priority by comparing total watching duration data of all the channels in the actual program category up to that time and f) automatically tuning to another channel that has the highest priority in the actual program category.
According to an embodiment of the invention, after said automatic channel switch function is called by pressing the respective button and after the program category being watched is determined and an automatically defined prioritized channel is selected, said automatic switch button can be re-pressed, upon which the next prioritized channel is displayed. Fig. 2 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes different tasks associated with the automatic channel switch function button according to the present invention.
In a further embodiment of the invention, said image display device is operable such that if said automatic channel switch button is hold pressed, all the prioritized channels are then visually listed in respect of various program categories.
In this regard, the invention ensures that a user will not mine a significant amount of data by way of using the metadata information provided by the TV services and will instead have a chance of reviewing an offered channel selection which is selected according to her/his personal preferences without getting lost in a multitude of attribute names, types and parameter descriptions as in the case of an electronic program guide.
