Description

PACKAGING MATERIAL WITH DOCUMENT HOLDER
TECHNICAL FIELD The present invention relates to containers, packaging or packaging which has been specially adapted for specific items or materials; containers, packaging elements or packaging for content with specific transport problems; packaging which completely or partially encloses items or materials. More specifically, the present invention relates to a holder for the enclosure of one or more documents with a shipment package, to a method for manufacturing said packaging material with a document holder and to a use of a holder for the enclosure of documents with a shipment package. BACKGROUND
An important aspect in the shipment of documents, packages or mail orders is the enclosure of the shipment documents which offer information relating to the content of a package or which specify the correct addressee. The circumstances in which such shipments take place and wherein the documents may possibly suffer unwanted damage must be taken into consideration here. Packaging which allows the necessary documents to be effectively enclosed has been developed for this purpose. A known method of sending packages or mail orders is carried out by enclosing goods in a flexible packaging bag or flyer. Packaging bags of this type are manufactured, for example, from a double, flexible polyethylene film with a substantially rectangular shape, wherein three sides are bonded to one another by means of a thermal weld and thus describe an enclosure. The opening of shipment bags of this type is closable by means of a cover film. In order to be able to enclose the shipment documents visibly, the outside of the shipment bag is provided with a pouch or pocket which is formed by a rectangular, transparent film which is bonded to the shipment bag on three circumferential edges by means of a thermal weld. An enclosure is thus provided for documents. In order to prevent the shipment documents from falling out of the enclosure during shipment via the fourth, non-closed circumferential edge, a second transparent film is provided according to the prior art, which is also bonded to the packaging bag on three circumferential edges by means of a thermal weld and overlaps the first film in such a way that the fourth, open circumferential edges of both overlapping transparent films face towards one another. The effective enclosure of the shipment documents during the shipment is thereby ensured.
The material of the present packaging is preferably polyethylene for weight optimisation. Other polyolefins can obviously also be used. Polyolefins according to the present invention are polymers (plastics) on the basis of exclusively carbon and hydrogen, more in particular, they are polymers of light alkenes, unsaturated hydrocarbons, such as ethene, propene and butene. These substances are often referred to in the industry as olefins rather than alkenes.
The main polyolefins according to the invention are: polyethylene or polyethene, polypropylene or polypropene, polybutylene or poly(l-butene), polyisobutylene or polyisobutene. The polyolefins also include copolymers of these monomers, for example, ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) or copolymers of ethene with acrylate esters.
Holders for the enclosure of documents with a shipment further have one or more of the following shortcomings: (i) due to the specific design of existing document carriers, the legibility of the enclosed documents is often insufficient, as a result of which, for example, address information cannot be read or cannot be correctly read; this is particularly problematic given the increasing automation and associated use of an electronic reader; (ii) the documents must be enclosed and protected during shipment against possible damage and/or unwanted manipulation; (iii) existing holders are often developed with an intensive use of materials; and (iv) the loss of shipment documents cannot always be ensured or cannot always be sufficiently ensured by document holders according to the prior art. The current prior art does not provide or does not adequately provide a solution to one or more of the aforementioned problems or shortcomings.
SUMMARY The present invention attempts to solve one or more of the aforementioned problems entirely or partially by providing a packaging material with a document holder according to Claim 1. For this purpose, the invention provides, in a first aspect, a packaging for the shipment of goods, comprising a packaging bag for the enclosure of goods and a pouch for the enclosure of shipment documents provided on said packaging bag, wherein said packaging bag and said pouch are substantially manufactured from polyethylene, and wherein said pouch is formed by means of a transparent polyethylene film comprising a plurality of circumferential edges of which at least two opposite edges are at least partially permanently bonded, for example, by means of a thermal weld, to said packaging bag, wherein said pouch is provided, on an edge describing the opening, with a reclosable joint for the reclosable opening and/or closing of said pouch.
This offers the advantage that no multiplicity of overlapping, transparent films is used as is customary in the case of document holders according to the prior art. The single, transparent film enhances the legibility of the information on the enclosed documents, which ultimately allows a higher automatic processability of the shipment packages with the use of an electronic reader through correct reading of address information on the documents. This further offers the advantage that the holder can be opened and closed several times without the holder being damaged in the process. This is a very significant advantage if the packaging is intended to be reused. The packaging according to the present invention can be used in this way at least several times, preferably at least five times, and more preferably at least ten times, even more preferably at least twenty times.
In a second aspect, the invention provides a method for manufacturing a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, comprising the steps of the co-extrusion of a polyethylene film, thereby obtaining a packaging film, the bonding of a transparent polyethylene film to said packaging film, and the thermal welding and subsequent cutting of at least two opposite circumferential edges, thereby obtaining a packaging bag, wherein a reclosable joint is also provided between said transparent polyethylene film and said packaging film.
In a third aspect, the invention provides a use of a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention for the enclosure of one or more shipment documents with a packaging bag comprising one or more goods. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

Unless otherwise defined, all terms used in the description of the invention, including technical and scientific terms, have the meaning as generally understood by the person skilled in the art in the technical field of the invention. The following terms are explicitly defined for a better assessment of the description of the invention. In this document, "a", "an" and "the" refer to both the singular and the plural unless the context clearly presumes otherwise. For example, "a segment" means one or more than one segment. If "approximately" or "around" or "about" is used in this document in relation to a measurable quantity, a parameter, a time period or time, and the like, this means variations of +/-20% or less, preferably +/-10% or less, more preferably +/-5% or less, even more preferably +/-1% or less, and even more preferably +/-0.1% or less than and of the cited value, insofar as such variations are applicable in the described invention. However, it must be understood that the value of the quantity in relation to which the term "approximately" or "around" "about" is used, is itself specifically disclosed.
The terms "comprise", "comprising", "consist of", "consisting of", "provided with", "include", "including", "encompass", "encompassing", "contain", "containing" are synonyms and are inclusive or open terms which indicate the presence of what follows, and which do not exclude or preclude the presence of other components, characteristics, elements, members, steps, known from or described in the prior art.
The citing of numerical intervals by the endpoints comprises all integers, fractions and/or real numbers between the endpoints, including these endpoints.
In a first aspect, the invention provides a packaging for the shipment of goods, comprising a packaging bag for the enclosure of goods and a pouch for the enclosure of shipment documents provided on said packaging bag, wherein said packaging bag and said pouch are substantially manufactured from polyethylene, and wherein said pouch is formed by means of a transparent polyethylene film comprising multiple circumferential edges of which at least two opposite edges are at least partially permanently bonded, for example, by means of a thermal weld, to said packaging bag, wherein said pouch is provided, on an edge describing the opening, with a reclosable joint for the reclosable opening and/or closing of said pouch. The term "one or more shipment documents" must be understood as one or more media with information, wherein said medium preferably comprises paper and/or an electronic medium. Preferably, said information is printed on said paper and said information is a representation of one or more elements selected from the group comprising address data, payment information, product information, scan code, bar code, tag, QR code and the like. More preferably, said information medium is an electronic medium on which one or more of said elements are provided and said electronic medium is selected from the group comprising, but not limited to, RFID tag, electronic chip, magnetic strip and the like. The term "electronic medium", used in the context of the present invention, refers to any information medium which can present information by means of electronic devices. More preferably, said electronic medium comprises a positioning system for tracking the location and/or route covered by said holder, such as, for example, but not limited to, a GPS system. The term "film" must be understood as a layer wherein the length and width may vary independently from one another and wherein the thickness of said layer is substantially, i .e. at least 90%, smaller than the length and width. Polyethylene is preferably used because of its intrinsic physical properties such as transparency, strength and flexibility and because of a high industrial availability and because of suitability for industrial recyclability. More preferably, both said packaging bag and said pouch are manufactured from polyethylene. This offers the advantage that both materials can be compatibly thermally welded. Said transparent polyethylene film preferably comprises a sufficiently high transparency. A high transparency allows the provision of sufficiently high-quality legibility of information on said documents, such as, for example, address data.
The term "permanent joint" "or permanent connection" refers to a connection between two films, wherein said connection is implemented by means of known binding means, such as, for example, but not limited to, glue and/or a thermal weld, or via mechanical anchoring. More specifically, it refers to a connection or joint which cannot be broken without damage to the underlying materials. In a preferred embodiment, said permanent joints are provided by means of thermal welding or gluing, most preferably by means of thermal welding.
Further advantages of the present invention are that a simple design is provided. As a result, the material consumption for said holder is minimal. This is important given that packaging material usually has a relatively short service life. A considerable quantity of waste can thus be avoided by the invention. Another advantage of a design according to the present invention is that preferably only one layer of transparent polyethylene film is provided for the enclosure of documents, as a result of which the legibility of, for example, address data, is not obstructed. A further advantage of the present invention is that, because of the minimal use of materials, the material choice is increased, as a result of which sufficiently strong materials can be selected which can ensure the protection of said documents against possible damage.
Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of a packaging (1) with indication of a packaging bag (2), one or more shipment documents (3), a transparent polyethylene film (4), a reclosable joint (5) for the reclosable connection of said film (4) with said packaging bag (2) and a permanent joint or connection (6).
In a first advantageous embodiment, said reclosable joint is formed by providing a binding means or glue on said packaging bag, with an adhesive layer above it, such as, for example, a silicone layer, and wherein the adhesive layer is further covered by means of a non-adhesive, non-binding layer, such as, for example, a polypropene film. A non-adhesive, non-binding layer of this type is referred to in the technical field as a peel-N-seal layer. In a further or alternative advantageous embodiment, said reclosable joint comprises what is known in the technical jargon as a 'reclosable glue' or Vesealable glue'. The reclosable glue can be applied to said packaging bag (2) and/or to said transparent polyethylene film (4), preferably to said transparent polyethylene film (4). The reclosable glue is preferably applied as a predominantly linear strip or as a predominantly linear series of one or more successive reclosable connection points.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said packaging bag is provided with a landing strip on an edge describing the opening, wherein the surface of said landing strip is characterized by a higher surface tension with respect to the surrounding surface, preferably as specified by ISO 8296: 2003.
ISO 8296:2003 describes a method for determining the surface tension of a surface of a plastic film or a film in contact with drops of specific test solutions. The ability of plastic films to retain inks, coatings or adhesives, such as, for example, glue, is primarily dependent on the nature of the surface of such films. This ability can be improved by means of one of the different surface-treatment techniques, such as, for example, a corona treatment and/or a plasma treatment. It is therefore possible to relate the surface tension of a plastic film surface to the ability to retain inks, coatings, adhesives, etc. According to the aforementioned preferred embodiment, said landing strip is a strip with improved properties for bonding to an adhesive. In a more preferred embodiment, the difference in surface tension between said landing strip and said surrounding surface is at least 1 Dyne or 1 mN/m, and preferably at least 2 Dyne. More preferably, said difference in surface tension is 3 Dyne or more, and even more preferably 4 Dyne or more. Most preferably, said difference in surface tension is 5 Dyne or more. In a further embodiment, said difference in surface tension can assume any value ranging from 5 Dyne, 10 Dyne, 15 Dyne, 20 Dyne, 25 Dyne, 30 Dyne, 35 Dyne, 40 Dyne, 45 Dyne or 50 Dyne, or any value in between.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said packaging bag also comprises a film cover, wherein said film cover is suitable for overlapping, in the closed position, at least partially, yet preferably completely, with said landing strip.
Said landing strip may, for example, be obtained by first subjecting the provided area or strip to a surface treatment, such as, for example, a corona treatment and/or a plasma treatment, in order to increase the surface tension. In a preferred embodiment, said landing strip is obtained by applying a coating or varnish layer to said polyethylene film. It is thereby intended to obtain a rougher and/or more polar surface, with better adhesive properties compared to binding means. This offers the advantage that a permanent joint can be obtained when said packaging bag is reclosed. It can normally be expected that a permanent joint of this type is obtained with the contacting of said film cover with said landing strip for a period of less than 1 minute, and preferably for a period of less than 30 seconds. Even more preferably for a period of less than 5 seconds and most preferably for a period of less than 2 seconds. The packaging bag can thus, as it were, be sealed. Consequently, the packaging bag can no longer be opened without causing considerable or visible damage to the packaging, as a result of which a visual evaluation can be made in order to assess whether or not the packaging has been opened after sealing.
In a preferred embodiment, said film cover is provided on the reverse side, which is suitable for contacting with said landing strip, with a binding means, which is preferably protected by means of a peel-N-seal layer, suitable as at least temporary protection of said binding means. A binding means of this type may be comprised, for example, of a pressure-sensitive hotmelt adhesive. A binding means of this type is preferably provided as a series of a plurality of, substantially linearly arranged, binding strips. Said binding means preferably has a softening point between 50°C and 100°C, and more preferably between 60°C and 90°C, and even more preferably between 70°C and 85°C, measured according to ASTM E 28. Said softening point is most preferably at 72°C, 74°C, 76°C, 78°C, 80°C or 82°C, or any value in between. Said binding means similarly preferably also has a viscosity at 160°C of between 1000 mPa.s en 10000 mPa.s, and more preferably between 2000 mPa.s and 5000 mPa.s, and even more preferably between 3000 mPa.s and 3800 mPa.s, measured according to ASTM D 3236. Most preferably, said viscosity at 160°C is at 3000 mPa.s, 3200 mPa.s, 3400 mPa.s, 3600 mPa.s, 3800 mPa.s, or any value in between.
The use of a 'peel-N-seal' layer offers the advantage that the layer can easily be removed to expose said binding means on the film cover, wherein said packaging bag can then be closed by pressing said film cover with binding means onto said landing strip, with enclosure of one or more shipment goods in said packaging bag.
Figure 4 shows a schematic representation of a packaging (1) with a landing strip (8) and a cover film (9) provided with a peel-N-seal layer (10). The binding means on the cover film (9) is exposed by removing said peel-N-seal layer (10). In an advantageous embodiment, said binding means can be cured through light curing and/or contact with air, thus producing a permanent glue. The cover film (9) can then be turned over along the discontinued line, as a result of which the binding means lands on the landing strip (8). Within a relatively short time, in the region of a few seconds, a permanent joint is then established, and the packaging bag is thus sealed. In a further embodiment, said open end of said packaging bag is also provided with a second adhesive strip with a peel-N-seal layer. This offers the advantage that, if said packaging is reused, for example, for a second, subsequent shipment or a return shipment, the packaging bag can be adequately closed by means of a new adhesive strip. Similarly, a third, fourth, fifth, etc. adhesive strip can be provided for a plurality of subsequent shipments. This offers the significant advantage that the packaging can be reused and that shipments can easily be forwarded or returned.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said reclosable joint comprises a 'reclosable glue'.
The term "reclosable joint" or "reclosable bonding" must be understood as a closure or seal which can be opened several times and closed again without causing substantial damage to the constituent parts of the closure, i .e. said transparent polyethylene film (4) and said packaging bag (2) respectively.
This further offers the advantage that the holder can be opened and closed several times without the packaging being damaged in the process. This is a very significant advantage if the packaging is intended to be reused. The packaging according to the present invention can be used in this way at least several times, preferably at least five times, and more preferably at least ten times, and even more preferably at least twenty times. Figure 3 shows a schematic representation of a packaging (1) according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein a reclosable joint is provided with a peel-N- seal layer (7) suitable as at least temporary protection of the reclosable bond for the reclosable opening and/or closing of the pouch of the packaging. Said polyethylene film (4) is joined on the circumferential edges of the transparent polyethylene film (4) to the packaging bag (2) by means of permanent joints (6). The documents (3) can be placed under said polyethylene film (4) and are legible through the transparent film (4). More preferably, the glue composition of said reclosable glue comprises a component suitable for the at least partial curing of the glue, for example, following contact with air and/or light, and through said curing the reclosable glue can form a permanent joint, preferably when coming into contact with a landing strip, wherein the landing strip preferably has a higher surface tension compared to the surrounding surface.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said reclosable joint is comprised of a continuous or discontinuous pattern, wherein the discontinuous pattern is preferably composed of a series of two or more adhesive areas (5) which are applied substantially linearly.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein the ends of said reclosable joint extend to in front of the permanent joint on the circumferential edges between the transparent film and the packaging bag. This offers the advantage that no interruption is formed on the circumferential edges if the latter are formed, for example, by means of thermal welding. Interruptions of this type in fact form a potential source of material break or tearing of the thermal weld or alternative joint.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said reclosable joint is provided with a central strip which is free from said reclosable glue. The term 'central strip' is to be understood as a strip which is approximately, and preferably substantially, centrally located, i.e. overlaps with the central point between the two circumferential edges which are defined by the first and second end of the reclosable joint. The length of said central strip is preferably between 5% and 50% of the entire width of the reclosable joint, and more preferably between 10% and 25%. This offers the advantage that the pouch for shipment documents can easily be opened. In a further preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said reclosable joint is provided up to in front of the circumferential edges and therefore does not overlap said circumferential edges. This offers the advantage that the reclosable joint does not interrupt the permanent bond between said polyethylene film and said packaging bag. Interruptions of this type can in fact result in an inadequate or easily breakable adhesion between the transparent polyethylene film and the packaging bag. The reciosabie joint is preferably provided so that the distance between the closest point of said reciosabie joint and said circumferential edge is more than 0.1 cm and less than 5.0 cm, more preferably greater than 0.2 cm and less than 3.0 cm, and most preferably greater than 0.5 cm and less than 2.0 cm. More preferably, said packaging bag is printed with ink at the level of the reciosabie joint, so that the reciosabie joint is visually indicated, which increases the ease of use. Said central strip is further also indicated by means of ink imprints on said packaging bag, preferably with instructions for the reciosabie opening and closing of said pouch.
Figure 2 shows a schematic representation of a packaging material (1) with reciosabie joints for connecting a transparent film (4) to said shipment bag or packaging bag (2). Thereto, the reciosabie joint is an adhesive strip out of a series of two adhesive areas (5). Centrally and approximately halfway, the transparent film is free from adhesive means so that the reciosabie joint can easily be opened by an operator.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said packaging bag comprises a three- layer co-extrusion polyethylene. Said three-layer polyethylene is preferably formed through co-extrusion of one grey layer and two white layers, wherein the white layer is provided along the outside of the packaging bag. The white polyethylene layer on the outside is preferably subjected to a preliminary surface treatment, such as, for example, a corona treatment, in order to implement a printing with ink. User instructions, company logos and/or product information, for example, can thus be displayed on the packaging bag.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said reciosabie joint is provided with means for identifying the opening and/or closing of said pouch, for example, by means of an invisible ink. This offers the advantage that access to the shipment documents can be identified, which is, for example, advantageous in order to, for example, but not exclusively, identify unauthorised access to the documents. The multiple opening and closing of the reciosabie joint will ensure, for example, that the invisible ink present in the reciosabie joint will be spread over a plurality of places on the packaging bag, after which such imprints can be identified by means of corresponding visualisation techniques, such as, for example, but not limited to, the use of ultraviolet light, chemical reaction and/or thermal reaction.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said edges of said transparent film are provided with a series of two or more successive connection points between said transparent polyethylene film and said packaging bag. This offers the advantage that less binding means needs to be applied, if a binding means is used instead of a thermal weld.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein a plurality of edges of said transparent film are bonded to said packaging bag via a thermal weld. This offers the advantage that a strong, watertight bond can be formed.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said packaging bag comprises a three- layer co-extrusion polyethylene film with a total thickness of less than 60 pm. This offers the advantage that a minimum use of plastic material is required, which is advantageous in terms of both material saving and weight saving. This offers both an ecological and economic advantage during manufacturing of the packaging, and an energy advantage in the use during shipment. Said total thickness of the co- extrusion polyethylene film is preferably less than 55 pm, and even more preferably less than 50 pm.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention, wherein said transparent polyethylene film has a thickness of less than 50 pm. This also offers both an ecological and economic advantage during manufacturing, and also an energy advantage in the use during transport. Said total thickness of the transparent polyethylene film is preferably less than 40 pm, and even more preferably less than 20 pm.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a method according to the second aspect of the invention, wherein the surface of said polyethylene film is pre-treated for the printing, for example, using a corona treatment. This offers the advantage that the surface can be prepared to allow printing with ink. Company logos, product information and the like can thus be provided on said packaging. In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a method according to the second aspect of the invention, wherein the surface tension of at least one surface strip of said packaging film is increased, preferably by coating with a varnish layer, thereby obtaining a landing strip. Said landing strip is preferably located along the approximately half circumference of the opening of the packaging bag, and located opposite said cover film. Alternative methods allow said surface tension to be increased by means of plasma treatment and/or by means of corona treatment.
In a third aspect, the invention provides a use of a packaging according to the first aspect of the invention for the enclosure of one or more shipment documents with a packaging bag comprising one or more goods.
In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a use according to the third aspect of the invention, wherein said shipment documents (3) provide information on the content and/or sender of said mail shipment.
