Description

[Title established by the ISA under Rule 37.2] IMAGE DISPLAY DEVICE PROVIDING A PROGRAM-BASED USER COMMUNICATION PORTAL
The present invention relates to an image display device having metadata processing function such that users are provided with a real-time program-based communication panel during a program’s broadcast.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a significant amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that conventional methods for reaching a program content corresponding to the personal viewing preferences of a user from among a plurality of alternatives may become inefficient to the extent it is unperformable in a time-saving manner. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, channel surfing might take several hours before every single channel is glanced at least once. It is to be noted that a plurality of channels from different countries may be broadcasted in a multitude of categories and an electronic program guide although proving in this respect more efficient, still involves the evident disadvantage of processing time inefficiency for a user in order for examining all the electronic program guide pages.
Therefore, as the image display devices today offer a versatile and wide range of functions, services as well as connectivity to the Internet, a plurality of services and applications retrieve information from various sources such as broadcast service providers and Internet, it is desirable to process the retrieved information to provide a real-time program-based communication panel on the TV screen, which would guide viewers and provide them with more relevant information.
The present invention is devised under the recognition that a plurality of users viewing the same program content at a given time cannot directly communicate with each other. Accordingly, in accordance with the present invention, users are offered a communication platform which is program content specific in the sense that each channel has a specific common communication portal on which viewers of the same program content on the same channel can send messages to the viewer community.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as US2012254927, which discloses a method of sharing broadcasting channel information of a mobile device in a Social Networking Service (SNS) including, if a user comment is posted for a broadcasting program, acquiring broadcasting program information from a Television (TV), uploading the broadcasting program information to a handover broker, acquiring access information that is configured to access the broadcasting program information from the handover broker, and uploading the access information and the user comment to an SNS server.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operated such that users are provided with a real-time program-based communication panel during a certain program’s broadcast in a time-dependant manner. The present invention therefore provides that users are delivered comments, remarks and feeds in a channel and program-specific communication panel that remains active only over the course of the program.
The present invention provides a system and method by which users are provided with a real-time program-based communication panel during a certain program’s broadcast, as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method for operating an image display device according to which each channel has a specific common communication portal on which viewers of the same program content on the same channel can send messages to the viewer community.
The present invention proposes a system and method by which an image display device is operated, a control unit of the device being configured to continuously process metadata information to identify individual time durations of broadcast program contents on different channels and create a communication panel in the form to be associated with a program’s name information as received from the metadata information. The control unit generates an on-screen communication panel in the form of a text inputting panel to communicate textual data to viewers of a given program content on a given channel in a channel and program specific manner. The communication panel remains active only during a time interval corresponding to the duration of a program content.
Upon termination of the program content, the content of the communication panel including text messages from a plurality of viewers is automatically replaced by a new communication panel with no comments by the users as soon as a new program content starts and only viewers of the new program content have access for using this communication panel in association with a specific program content in a time-dependant manner.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in the claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method according to the present invention.
The present invention provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to automatically process the information obtained from broadcast service providers in the form of metadata information obtainable from the electronic program guide (EPG) data. It is known that digital broadcasting services generally provide information in regards to the genre and other particulars of the programs being watched. Such information may typically define a certain number of categories characterizing the content of a program. A content identifier therefore describes the contextual category of the digital program so as to let users obtain information as to the classification of an event or a program. As such, a significant amount of data in the form of metadata information containing a multitude of attribute names, types and parameter descriptions is receivable as primary information by way of using the information from the broadcaster.
According to the present invention, the metadata information is processed such that a real-time program-based communication tool is provided during a certain program’s broadcast, by which a plurality of users viewing the same program content at a given time directly communicates with each other. Therefore, users are offered a communication platform which is program content specific in the sense that each channel has a specific common communication portal on which only viewers of the same program content on the same channel can send messages to the viewer community.
According to the invention, as the user changes the channel being viewed, the communication panel automatically reloads on the screen in a selective manner, (i.e. depending on user preferences as will be delineated below). SDT (Service Description Table) data in compliance with DVB standards contains metadata information in transport streams with a certain PID number. Such information can for instance contain the transport stream id, the service id etc. According to the present invention, the remarks and comments on a given program content on a specific channel are shared based on the metadata information received from the service description tables. In other words, different programs form basis for different communication panels as defined based on the name of the specific service and program obtainable from metadata information.
Alternatively, broadcast programs that will have a dedicated communication panel can be selected based on predetermined criteria set by the user, such as for instance based on the genre of the broadcast program or on a channel-specific manner. For those broadcast programs that are currently viewed and also fulfilling the criteria set by the user, i.e. if for instance the program belongs to a preselected program category, an on-screen communication panel in the form of a textual input field is generated to be displayed in a manner to be overlaid on the actually viewed program content.
In this regard, an on-screen communication panel is generated to remain active only during a limited time window so that each specific program content can separately be a point of focus for the viewers of the same program content and information and data becoming abundant and irrelevant can be avoided. To this end, the user of the image display device may determine a desired number of program categories or selectively activate or deactivate communication portal function for certain programs. A control unit of the image display device continuously analyzes the metadata information to locate program contents in the desired categories.
As an alternative embodiment according to the invention, the user can determine a desired number of information tags such as actor names or any topic or keyword of interest. In this case, the metadata information is processed as searchable records in the indexable metadata information and if the metadata information of the program being viewed contains any matching keyword, the communication portal will be automatically activated for such programs. This provides the additional advantage of participating to a viewer community only if the concerned program content is interested by the respective users.
Therefore, when at least one keyword in a list of keywords as determined by the user matches a part of the information (particulars such as name, category etc.) in the metadata information in relation to a program being viewed, the communication portal is activated.
In accordance with an alternative embodiment of the invention, the image display device having Internet connectivity may also alternatively retrieve additional information in relation to a specific program content from a remote source or database such as networking related information, e.g., comments, remarks and/or a twitter feeds from a third party resource. Such information can be real-time or archived information.
The TV front panel or the remote control can be provided with a dedicated button such that the user can anytime trigger viewing of the communication panel. Any comment by any user can be filtered according to user-defined settings before appearing in the communication panel.
In summary, the present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising a control unit effecting operation of the image display device.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the control unit is configured to continuously process metadata information to identify individual time durations of broadcast program contents on different channels.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the control unit is configured to create a communication panel in the form to be associated with a program’s name information as received from the metadata information.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the control unit is configured to generate the on-screen communication panel in the form of a text inputting panel to communicate textual data to viewers of a given program content on a given channel in a channel and program specific manner.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the control unit is configured to maintain the communication panel active during a time interval corresponding to the duration of a program content.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the remarks or comments on a given program content on a specific channel are shared in a communication panel defined based on the name of the specific service and program obtainable from metadata information.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the communication panels are activated for broadcast programs being currently viewed and based on predetermined criteria set including at least the genre of the broadcast program.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the metadata information is processed as searchable records in the manner that when a user-defined predetermined query matches at least one information field present in the metadata information, the communication panel is activated.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the communication panel is selectively activated or deactivated.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the control unit retrieves information in relation to a specific program content from a remote source or database in the form of real-time or archived networking related information.
In this regard, the present invention ensures that an image display device is operable to selectively provide social network based information in association with a real-time broadcast program content to be displayed during viewing of the program broadcast. Users are delivered real-time comments, remarks and/or feeds in relation to a specific content in a time duration dependant manner.
Accordingly, users can continue their TV viewing experience while at the same time obtaining additional information of potential interest. The information is delivered in a non-intrusive manner without interrupting the TV viewing experience of the users.
