SBSTC to Build A New Bus Terminus in Amtala

The South Bengal State Transport Corporation has decided to shift its existing terminus at Dharmatala to Amtala in South 24 Parganas. The 30 SBSTC buses that run every day in the roads of Asansol and Durgapur will now stop at this new bus stand that will be built very soon. 2 acres of land has already been sanctioned for the construction of this stand along with an adjoining cafeteria. With this change in the location of the terminus, the bus routes are also going to be revised. The buses from Asansol and Durgapur will now take two different paths from Esplanade to reach Amtala. While one route will be via Behala, Thakurpukur, Joka, the other will be through Jadavpur and Garia.

A significant increase in profits is expected from the changes brought about in the bus routes. The SBSTC has noticed that in the last few years, the profit has not increased as much as the expenditure and thus they are now convinced that in order to change this dismal picture, they need to make optimum utilisation of their resources by adopting certain new principles on the basis of which the system will operate. The authorities will check the number of government sanctioned employees to make sure that salaries are not provided to unauthorised workers. The state government spends Rs 50 Crore every month on this service as subsidy and the authorities are making effort to keep the subsidy amount under control. Apart from this, they are going to examine the bus routes and timings once again to give greater importance to the profit producing areas in future.
