Description:
Abstract:
The Global Pastures dataset represents the proportion of land areas used as pasture land (land used to support grazing animals) in the year 2000. Satellite data from Modetate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Satellite Pour l'Observation de la Terre (SPOT) Image Vegetation sensor were combined with agricultural inventory data to create a global data set. The visual presentation of this data demonstrates the extent to which human land use for agriculture has changed the Earth and in which areas this change is most intense. The data was compiled by Navin Ramankutty, et. al. (2008) and distributed by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
Purpose: To provide data on the extent of pasturelands for research on human-environment interactions.

Lineage:
Process Step:
Process Description:
1. Combine Boston University's MODIS land cover data and SPOT Vegetation's global land cover (GLC 2000) dataset to create 391 composite land cover classes.
2. Callibrate the satellite data against the Agricultural Inventory Data by first computing land area fractions from inventory data and use of linear models relating satellite data sets to agricultural inventory data.
3. Adjust Pasture area estimates. Pasture area estimates from land cover datasets were aggregated to administrative level and then compared to the inventory data to determine correction factors. The correction factors were contrained between 0.2 and 5.0.
