Baseball out slugs Southwestern 17-7

BELTON, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team scored multiple runs in five different innings as the Cru rolled to a 17-7 victory over Southwestern University Tuesday night in Belton. UMHB improves to 9-10 on the season with the win while the loss drops the Pirates to 7-11.
 
The Cru took a 1-0 lead on Malek Bolin's RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. The Pirates put three runs on the board in the top of the second, but UMHB answered in the bottom of that inning. Brandon Madden drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Rhett Grosz scored the tying run on s Southwestern throwing error. The Cru then exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third. Bolin singled home the go-ahead run, Hunter Jones added a two-run single and Grosz drove in a run with a groundout. Blake Harmon followed with a two-run homer and Dawson Shibley closed out the scoring with an RBI single, The Pirates got a run back in the top of the fourth to cut it to 10-4. Jones and Harmon scored on wild pitches and Brandon Madden drove in a run with a groundout to put UMHB up 13-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Preston Witt's three-run homer cut the lead to 13-7 in the top of the sixth inning. Madden and Caimyn Holiday drove in runs in the bottom of the inning to push it back out to a 15-7 advantage. Grosz added a sacrifice fly and Shibley walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to end the game on the run rule.
 
Alex Palczewski picked up the win for UMHB to move to 1-0 on the season. He scattered six hits and struck out two in four innings of relief work. Holiday had three hits for the Cru and four other players added two hits apiece. Witt had three hits for Southwestern, but the Pirates also committed six costly errors on the night.
 
The Cru will continue its four-game home stand with a three-game conference series with Sul Ross State later this week. UMHB will take on the Lobos in a 4 pm doubleheader on Thursday before the two teams close out the week with a 1 pm single game on Friday.
