Edsell graduated from Grafton High School in 1941 and was an employee of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in Grafton. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a private on December 15, 1942.
Edsell married Lenora A. Ridenour, a daughter of Burr Edwin Ridenour and his wife Stella Wilminia Ramus. They were married by Conrad W. McDonald in Taylor County on December 2nd, 1943.
Edsell was assigned to the 301st BG 32nd Squadron as a radio/gunner. His plane was shot down over Austria on April 2, 1944.
His daughter, Edsell Jean Poe, was born on September 2, 1944.
