Developer Diaries aim to give a transparent view to our community on how the build of Bloktopia is progressing. We value your loyalty and passion for our project, and we will be sharing as much information as we can about 1 specific feature — hopefully at the end of each week!
We will continue to work in an agile manner, and will be adapting and optimising our roadmap continuously. That is the nature of building a metaverse. Some things we share here might not ever come to fruition, but our goal will be to set clear expectations and communicate with you all about the upcoming roadmap and priorities.
This weekly Developer Diary update builds upon the theme from edition #16, enhancing the user experience for a broader audience. Here, we specifically focus on the integration of capabilities which enable desktop access to Bloktopia and MetaSpaces.
What is Desktop and how does it differ from VR in Bloktopia?
In short, the main difference between viewing a virtual environment in Desktop and VR is the equipment required and the subsequent view you get.
In VR, you interact with the environment from a first person perspective of your avatar and use VR equipment, such as Oculus Quest headsets and hand controls. Whereas in Desktop, you interact with the virtual environment in third person and operate your avatar using any computer, i.e. PC, Laptop, Mac or Macbook. This will eventually evolve to include mobile and tablet devices too.
Desktop intergration enables Bloktopia to be more accessible across several devices. It is the view used in the majority of Metaverses and AAA games live today.
To visualise this, think back to the first Alpha Demo released of Bloktopia’s level 1. This is the typical view and experience from a non-VR perspective.
Why are we creating desktop access to Bloktopia?
The main reason above all else is the ability to further expand accessibility for ALL users.
Whilst VR technology is very exciting and set to be the future of Metaverse experiences, it is still a relatively new and costly technology that comes with its own development challenges, and is currently not widely adopted by the masses.
Therefore, if Bloktopia and MetaSpaces was just VR only (just like the first live event through MetaSpaces was), this would limit both the amount of users who could join simply through not having the correct equipment, as well as limit the amount of people able to join from a technology capability perspective too.
This is simply not an option for the home of crypto, as Bloktopia has always been for the masses, and why desktop integration will be so key to future developments.
Other benefits of Desktop
Along with being able to offer access to Bloktopia and MetaSpace events to a wider audience group, there are other such benefits to Desktop.
We have split out hardware level controls so we can map interactions from different devices to the same input. This means we can have a consistent experience across different devices more easily, improving user experience.
It also means there is improved rate of concurrent users through a more mainstream access point to the Metaverse as well as a reduced amount of bugs and glitches, further improving user experiences.
What does this mean for VR in Bloktopia?
As mentioned above, VR technology is very exciting and is certain to be the future of Metaverse experiences. This is why we integrated the technology into MetaSpaces originally and the capabilities will remain within the space as we develop further. So rest assure knowing that VR will remain as part of Bloktopia and will be a key feature in the future!
