Women's Soccer Opens With 1-1 Draw at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – Playing in its first game under Head Coach Casey Brown, the University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team opened the 2021 season with a 1-1 draw at Temple on Friday evening.

It was the first match in 657 days for the Quakers (0-0-1) as the Red and Blue ran their unbeaten streak against the Owls (0-1-1) to four games dating back to the 2012 season.

*In net, sophomore Laurence Gladu was solid in her first game as a member of the Red and Blue. She made three saves in 110 minutes of action.

*Penn held a 12-4 advantage in corners and the Quakers had 16 shots on goal compared to four for Temple.

*Junior Sizzy Lawton had six shots in the game, five of which were on goal.

How It Happened
Penn controlled the pace and possession early in the contest. During the opening half, the Quakers took seven corner kicks and had nine shots.

However, against the run of play Temple broke through with its first goal of the season to take a 1-0 edge in the 31st minute. Off a free kick, the ball sailed over several players from both teams in the box, and at the back post Erin Theiller snuck a one-timer that bounced past Gladu's right and tucked inside the far post. .

Penn turned up the pressure after that with several more opportunities to close out the half. Lawton, in particular, had two fantastic chances including a bullet that rang the left post. However, the Quakers were unable to breakthrough and the Owls took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Penn finally got what it deserved in the 68th minute with Fontenot's tally. Teuschl delivered a free kick from well outside the box, and Fontenot's header snuck past the Temple goalkeeper inside the right post.

Penn had a handful of chances in the closing minutes of regulation and throughout the two overtime periods. However, each time they saw shots turned aside or sail just wide.
