First New Barcelona Metro Trains Enter Commercial Service

The first new trains for Barcelona Metro’s line 3 have entered commercial service.

In total, the manufacturer, Alstom, is supplying 50 new five-car metro trains that will replace the rolling stock on lines 1 and 3. Following the commissioning of the first train on line 3, the other metro trains will replace the existing fleet over the next few months.

Alstom won the order to supply these new Metropolis metro trains in October 2019 for ~ EUR 320 million.

The metro operator is TMB (Transportes Metropolitanos de Barcelona).

TMB President Laia Bonet said:

“With these new trains, we are improving the service by offering more comfort and accessibility, and we are also moving towards a more sustainable mobility thanks to their lower energy consumption. They are also more accessible with wider doors and corridors, and we are very aware that this is a good solution for the mobility of everyone in our society, in our city.”

Alstom is manufacturing the trains locally in Catalonia.

As part of the design, Alstom said it focused heavily on sustainability and accessibility. This means a lightweight structure, low energy consumption, technical reliability, ease of maintenance and improved air filtration, the company said.

For efficient maintenance management, the trains are equipped with remote control and sensors.

This new fleet is also an upgrade compared to the current fleet in terms of digital features. There are new information systems, more digital screens, video surveillance and USB ports.

Alstom said these trains were also quieter than their predecessors.
