Dalhousie is a small pine clad hill station in Himachal Pradesh. This hill station, spread over five hills, attracts tourists with its old-world charm, greenery and adventures.

Climate of Dalhousie-

  • Summers extend from March to Mid-June and temperature ranges from 12℃ to 27℃.
  • Monsoon extends from Mid-June to September having moderate showers. (avg raingall-88 inches)
  • Winters (November-February) can be extremely cold with temperature ranging from 1℃ to 17℃.

History of Dalhousie-

  • Dalhousie region has 84 ancient temples which are more than a thousand years old.
  • Dalhousie once was under the rule of Chamba dynasty, during the 6th century A.D. but the rich culture and art of the region is still preserved here. Later it came under British rule.
  • Dalhousie got its name from the viceroy of India: Lord Dalhousie. This was proposed by Sir. Donald McLeod.

Culture of Dalhousie-

  • People- As per 2011 census, the population of Dalhousie is 7051. The locals are majorly Hindu’s followed by Muslims and Christians. The main work here is agriculture.
  • Languages- Hindi is the main language of Dalhousie. Pahari is also commonly used by the locals. People dealing with tourists can speak English too.
  • Art- Pahari type of painting is famous in Dalhousie. The dance form like Burah, Nati, Dangi though rare are still performed in this region supported by instruments like Flute, Ghungroo, Ektara.
  • Festivals- Minjar Fair- a seven-day tribal celebration in the Chamba valley. Other festivals like haryali, Baisakhi and Diwali are also celebrated with great enthusiasm.
