A proud day! Thanks to the generous donation of longtime Detroit Zoological Society contributors Shery Cotton and her family, we were able to make significant enhancements to the oldest and most iconic building at the Detroit Zoo. This beautiful space, which has greeted guests at the front of our grounds for more than 95 years, was formally renamed the Ron Kagan Wildlife Interpretive Gallery during a special unveiling ceremony. Shery’s support marks a full circle moment, honoring Ron by re-naming the facility that was the focus of his first major capital project as director of the Detroit Zoo (1992-2021). We are so grateful to be able to share this renovated space with our guests for many, many years to come.

Ron Kagan distinguished himself as a visionary leader, demonstrating exceptional foresight into the capabilities of technology and sensory-enriched experiences. During the mid-1990s, a time when multimedia and mobile devices were just beginning to surface, Ron pioneered cutting-edge methods in the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery. He recognized the significance of incorporating a diverse array of elements: a fine art collection, a film series, remote-controlled butterfly and coral reef camera stations, and interactive touch-screen kiosks. These interpretive tools were unprecedented in the typical zoo setting. His ability to harness art and interactive media to spark an enthusiasm for the natural world was extraordinarily forward-thinking. This recognition is both fitting and richly deserved.

A well deserved honor. One of my absolute favorite Zoo spaces. A visionary space honoring the legacy of a visionary leader.
