An interesting article, from McKinsey & Company's #CIO Agenda series, underscores the significance of carefully evaluating various #technology trends for making well-informed decisions.
The methodology outlined in the article emphasizes four key parameters for assessing a tech trend:
- Disruption in Business Value: evaluates the potential of the trend to cause a significant disruption in business value.
- Independence and Support: assesses the extent to which the trend can be adopted and supported by independent teams, reducing dependencies.
- Connectivity: examines whether the trend operates as a standalone entity, hindering its scalability through existing operating practices.
- Extensibility: considers how much the trend can enhance technology and management practices.
From my perspective, the "Extensibility" parameter appears to be more of an enabler for any impactful technology decision. Organizations should align their operating model, encompassing budget, skillsets, and ways of working, across both technology and business domains in order to realize the expected value from any chosen technology trends.
