Representation does matter to an array of people, including this University of Texas at Austin graduate student, Kara Villarreal, who recently graduated from West Texas A&M University. This inclludes ensuring that Hispanic women succeed in post-secondary institutions of higher learning. Take a moment to read Kara's blog: "The Significance of Hispanic Women Representation in Higher Education." 🔍 Seeking insights from Black women in STEM! 🔍I am conducting some new research regarding Black women who are currently in or recently graduated from a master's or doctorate program in a STEM discipline. If any of you fit this criteria and would like to be a part of a 15-20 minute interview, please comment, like, and repost! Thanks in advance! #BlackWomenInSTEM #ResearchStudy #DiversityAndInclusion #blackwomenintech #phdlife #phdstudent #academia #academicsuccess #blackinacademia US Department of Education reports: Black women make up just over 1% percent of people earning STEM doctoral degrees making up the second lowest demographic of women with Native American women having the lowest percentages. Significant opportunity gaps exist in STEM education and careers for women, especially for women and girls of color. Only 1.8% of Black women are employed in STEM. Positive representation and culturally responsive teaching in STEM fields can help change that. #beacademyforgirls #identitybasededucation #representationmatters #stemeducation #girlseducation #nashvilleschools

A positive STEM identity is required to recruit and retain students in STEM (Martin-Hansen, 2018). I had a great time speaking at the Louisiana State University Women’s Center last night during the general student body meeting of the Feminists In Action LSU organization. I spoke on Women in STEM on a panel with two other speakers. My talk/contribution focused on the following: 🔆gender representation: women remain underrepresented in STEM fields despite the progress in diversification. 🔆benefits of diversity, which highlighted the power and influence of seeing someone like myself in the room, and the advantage of cognitive diversity, which leads to innovation, problem-solving, creativity, increased wages, economic development, and international competitiveness. 🔆developing interest, motivation, sense of belonging, and STEM identity. This highlighted the power of mentorship, role modeling, and the influence of others, integrated STEM instructions, internships, out-of-school/classroom learning, other experiences, the consideration of intersectionality, and the active involvement of students while leveraging their community of practice. At the end of the session, I spoke with students one-on-one to chat about their interests and struggles. We've got a growing population of women interested in STEM; we need to provide resources and opportunities to sustain this interest and help them build their identity. #WomeninSTEM #Education #STEM #LSU #STEMIdentity

There are now more women working in STEM fields (26% female, up from 14% in 1980) than there are men working in school classrooms (23%, down from 33% in 1980). Strong efforts from government and philanthropy to further increase female representation in STEM. Good. No efforts to stem the decline in male representation in teaching. Not good. Workforce | Climate & Sustainability | Partner at Deloitte Australia. Talks about #workforce #climate # sustainability
Earlier this year, Natasha Stott Despoja and I published an article on the critical task to increase the number of women in climate related fields now in order to drive diversity as these fields expand exponentially over the coming years and decades. Important to this is the ability to bring more women into STEM fields. The AFR this week highlights one of the (many) challenges - many women who graduate with a STEM degree don't move into a STEM job. https://lnkd.in/gtHDi2BK
Why so few women with a STEM degree work in a STEM job
