This is the 2nd year in a row that I'm not present for #gitex dubai. For anyone working in #dubai and even remotely connected to #technology and #IT, gitex attendance is a must. Love it or hate it, but you can't do without it. If you are a IT product or Services company, you will be noticed more by your absence than by your presence. Gitex is a sort of a festival as much as it is an exhibition. Everybody who is anybody in the field of Technology is present there and it nicely breaks a work year into BG and AG (before gitex and after gitex). If you are far away from Dubai like I am and feeling nostalgic for the show, you can watch the highlights in the attached video. Here are some of my favorite and not so favorite memories of gitexes past: - Meeting vendors and vendor representatives face to face who you normally only interact with over the phone or more recently over video-conferences. - Filling up your bag with flashy brochures which you think you will read once you are back in the office but sadly end up unceremoniously dumping in the trash bin. - Picking up free giveaways, most of which you will not use and end up giving away to friends or relatives clueless about technology who will ask you silly questions like "is f5 a new fighter jet?" or "does nutanix make health suppliments?" - Checking out which company has the largest or the most swanky stand at the show - Getting attention from C-level staff of principals who would otherwise not give you the time of day - Listening to top speakers on all the hot topics in the world of technology - Running into past and present clients, partners, competitors and former colleages and reconnecting in a less formal and festive atmosphere - The occasional awkward moment when you bump into your prospective client who has been avoiding your calls all year round but now has no choice but to speak to you. At gitex you can run but you can't hide! - And the not-so-occasional instance when you see your long term customer held captive by your competitor at their stand and you feel the need to politely intervene and crafting disrupt the conversation with a, "Hey Ahmed, there you are! Been looking for you everywhere. You must be starving, let's get a bite to eat: as you whisk him away like a bodyguard does a high level diplomat - And what about when you park yourself at a nice comfortable chair at an unknown vendor's stand to rest your weary feet, and then be obliged to listen to some obtuse product pitch in which you are least interested. Priceless. Only at Gitex! - Struggling with both sensory and information overload - And finally how can I forget backpain, achy feet and the priciest slice of pizza anywhere; then again, gitex comes but only once a year To everyone who has had a grueling week on your feet pressing flesh from your gitex stand, here's wishing a restful and happy weekend.
