Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has revealed the true extent of the power his mother holds over his finances despite being an extremely well-paid athlete in the US.

It turns out that he is only able to spend the money that he earns from endorsements and sponsors, whilst his actual salary for playing in the NBA is kept aside.

Tatum's mum holds the power

Speaking whilst on 'In Depth' with journalist Graham Bessinger, Tatum talked about how his mum, Brandy Cole, manages his finances

"We had a deal before I got drafted that I couldn't spend the money I make from the Celtics, that I have to live off my endorsements," Tatum told Bessinger. "Her and my accountant agreed.

"They didn't know that I'd make as much as I did off the court. So in my mind, I gotta spend that money," Tatum said with a laugh.

He is not short of endorsement deals as he is professionally involved with companies such as Jordan, Subway and Gatorade, among others.

Meanwhile, Tatum is banking a good amount of money from the Celtics. According to Spotrac, after this season, Tatum will have already made 88 million dollars in the NBA. He's only in the second year of a five-year, 163 million dollars extension.

Not a fan of spending money

Cole was on the show as well and she explained that Tatum does like to spend his money.

"Jayson likes nice things," Cole said. "He likes nice watches. Technically, I can't say no, right?"

One of the most famous former NFL players, Rob Gronkowski, revealed back in 2018 that he lived by the same rules as Tatum by spending only his endorsement money rather than the wages he received from sport.
