Santo Domingo de Los Colorados or just Santo Domingo; is one of the newest cities in Ecuador. It is the capital of the Santo Domingo de Los Tsáchilas province; situated about 133 km from Quito. This city was labeled as "Los Colorados" due to members of the Tsáchilas community have the custom of painting their hair red with achiote. About the altitude, Ambato has an elevation of 2,051 feet (625 meters) above sea level.
Santo Domingo is a very popular location for plantations growing cocoa, coffee, vanilla, pineapple, banana, citrus fruits, and oil-palm.
Local holidays are Cantonization of Santo Domingo on July 3 and Provincialization on November 6.
