Dzan, Mexico - Polarsteps

We reached the village of Dzan - home to the church of Santiago Apostol and one of the many religious structures that make up Yucatan's so-called Ruta de los Conventos (The Convent Route). Following the arrival of the Franciscans around 1524, a large number of religious buildings - colonial churches, cathedras, monasteries and convents - were built in the west-central part of Quintana Roo and, rather conveniently, within a simple day trip of Mérida. Many of the structures are shuttered but several are still in operation today.
