Aston Villa will be without Tyrone Mings for the rest of the year as the defender recovers from a hamstring injury sustained against Leicester

  • Tyrone Mings won't play another minute for Aston Villa until next year
  • Mings sustained a hamstring injury during the defeat by Leicester on Sunday
  • It is a blow to Villa after Mings had impressed during the early part of the season

Tyrone Mings will miss at least the rest of 2019 with Aston Villa as the club expect him to be out for a minimum of three weeks.

The England defender damaged his hamstring early in Villa’s 4-1 home defeat by Leicester last Sunday - although questions were asked of the Villa management when he was initially allowed to stay on after treatment, as his inability to chase Jamie Vardy for a through-ball gave the Foxes forward a clear run on goal.

Mings had a scan on Monday night and the initial prognosis is that he will miss the Premier League matches against Sheffield United, Southampton, Norwich and Watford, as well as the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on Tuesday.

It remains to be seen how quickly Mings, 26, can return to action at the turn of the year.

He made an excellent start to the campaign with Villa, earning an England call-up as a result, although his form had slipped a little before the injury.

Meanwhile, Villa will allow goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic to leave on loan when the transfer window opens in January.

Kalinic joined Villa from Gent only a year ago but has not made a first-team appearance since February - initially due to injury - and he is keen to get regular action to cement his place in the Croatia squad for Euro 2020.

Villa are prepared to let Kalinic go even though Jed Steer, Tom Heaton’s deputy, is out long term with a damaged Achilles.
