Pectus excavatum

Also called: funnel chest
A condition in which the breastbone sinks into the chest.
  • Treatment can help, but this condition can't be cured
  • Usually self-diagnosable
  • Lab tests or imaging rarely required
  • Chronic: can last for years or be lifelong
Pectus excavatum is often noticeable shortly after birth and typically worsens during the adolescent growth spurt. It's more common in boys. It may be associated with genetic or connective tissue diseases.
In severe cases, pectus excavatum can look as if the center of the chest has been scooped out, leaving a deep dent.
Pectus excavatum doesn't usually require treatment, though physical therapy may help if symptoms develop. Rarely, surgery is needed to correct the condition.
Common: More than 200,000 US cases per year
