The city of Shargorod is located in the Vinnitsa district (oblast), Ukraine, 35 miles (56km) from the city of Vinnitsa and 190 miles (306 km) southwest of Kiev. The present town's population is about 9,000. In 2002, the Shargorod region’s population was 64.7 thousands.

Founded in the late 16th century, this town is one of the few remaining Jewish "shtetls" (townships). It was also called Szargorod (Polish), Sharigrad (Russian), Sharigrod (Ukraine), Sargorog (Hebrew), and Kuchuk-Istanbul by Turks during 1672-1699.
